Default another battery question 2 deep cycle vs starting

Can you use 2 deep cycle batteries to match the CCA of a starting battery?

replacing my batteries, neighbor has 2 brand new Deep Cycle group 27 that he bought about a month ago (july 2017 stickers) but ended up not needing so they are just sitting on the shelf.

In the past I've always gone with 2 group 27 starting as replacements- since my boat is a diesel.

But wondering since I almost always run the boat on BOTH batteries- including on initial start up- I can get away with the 2 deep cycles to make up for the CCA amps (i.e, 2-540CCA deep cycle vs. 800CCA starting)

If those the only 2 then no. You shouldn't need to use all your batteries to start your engine. Defeats the point of having 2.

Yes. you can use deep cycle batteries (with sufficient CCA) as a starting battery. Just don't try using a starting battery in a deep cycle application. This, according to Trojan. And yes, paralleling them will increase CCA.
