Default Garmin 7612xsv sonar question

Hey guys, I have a Garmin 7612xsv chartplotter with sidescan sonar. My boat has the GT51m transducers. I have been trying to mark fish at planeing speeds by changing the scroll speed and frequency. Is there a trick to this. Before I head out for more testing could any of you guys give me some tips. Thanks a lot.

you want to mark fish on the side scan at planing speed...not sure that is possible...I did mark schools of Blackfin on the surface at trolling speed..but haven't yet marks any fish at planing speed

Thats not at all likely to happen unless you get a very good install location and your looking for large schools of fish. Sidescan sucks for finding individual fish even at slow speeds and is hopeless at planing speeds.

You have a much better chance with 2D, but its still iffy at speed with a transom mount TD.

I should have explained my set up a little better. My system has 2 transducers for side view. Both are the GTM51M transducers. My system has down view, and sideview. The system had chirp and 80 and 135 frequencys. It also has I think 3 different scroll speeds plus auto. There is also different options to view the screen. Splitscreen with different frequencys, split screen zoom, ect.
Im trying to figure out how to mark fish while at planning speed which is around 20 knots. I tried the maximum freq. with the fastest scroll speed but couldn't spot any thing other than the surface and the bottom. I was hoping someone might have some tips. Thanks for the previous
quick replys

The GT51 thru hull pair are for side/down scan which is best for providing bottom structure pix. It is not good for showing fish. You'll need another ducer to mark fish, eg. the B75M that is in the transom version of the GT51, or a standalone thru hull B75 or B175. You'll also have to choose freq range (beam width) depending on your specific application.

Thanks a ton NEBassMan. I would have never figured that out with the different transducers Garmin has. Thanks, John

NEBAssMan, can I simply change one of my GT51m and replace it with the B75m. I would then have one of each on my boat. Will this work electronically? Thanks again

the GT51m has traditional sonar..the blue screen red arches...then down scan and side scan....you don't need another transducer....just beware that side scan is not good for showing fish, even at slow speeds.

The GT51 already has a very good 600 watt traditional element in it....80-160 kHz...24-13 degree beamwidth.

No real need to add the B75M.

Yep, I got that wrong, sorry. The -TH version does indeed have trad chirp as well (B75M) so no extra ducer. Hope you didn't already drill a 3" hole in your boat!

I am having a boat built currently and it will have a 51M transom mount, so I'm not sure how you specifically go about selecting the trad chirp ducer to get it on your screen.

It's in the transducer menu. Don't remove the GT 51, if you do then you will lose one side or the other in Side Vu

Are you using the Chirp sonar and not the Down Vu or Side Vu when on plan? That's my suggestion for you.
