Default Which stereo?

Need a head unit or black box for my boat. I have 4 8" Audiopipe speakers to install. Don't need anything overly complicated and expensive. I have a Raymarine ES series with the fusion link, but I don't want to spend $500+ on a stereo. Don't really care that much about linking it to the MFD, but would pay extra for one that could use a wireless remote if there's any budget models that can do that. I'm looking at:

Boss Audio MGR350B
JBL PRV 175 or Jensen MS3ARTL
Infinity PRV250 or 350
Fusion MS-RA55

What black box models am I overlooking? What other models that are compact? Don't have much dash space so looking at gauge hole size, compact, or black box with remote.

Hello. Check out the Rockford Fosgate range, not sure about price but nice little units. Hope this helps.

Fusion MS-RA70N. Not a black box model but they are at a good price and will accept a wired remote via NMEA2000 such as the NRX300. Also capable of connecting to NMEA2000 compatible MFD's to be controlled off the display as well. This would work with your ES series Raymarine unit with a NMEA2000 to SeaTalkNG adapter cable. We custom make these adapter cables for about $120.

I don't think you want to run 8" speakers with a deck. Won't you need an amp too? Those are probably too big / powerful for a deck

The Kicker KMC2 should be looked at, it is gauge sized.

Thanks Chris and Brian. I think it may be a good idea to go with something like the 70N that has the capability of being upgraded and networked down the road as if I want to spend the money to do all that without having to buy a whole new unit.

Regarding the speakers, I've thought about that. I'm not necessarily trying to get the max loudness out of anything. I'm not at all a stereo junkie and have no intention to try to blow out somebody else at the sandbar. Just want something that can be heard over a 5.7 I/O at 3000 rpms cruising in and out. I'm really not opposed to trading them for 6.5" speakers if I need to. I just needed speakers and they were a good deal off the parts forum months back when I started stockpiling project parts.

The BB100 looks like it has all the features I could want also. Any comment on the BB100 versus the 70N? Only downfall to black box seems to me that the only way to have a display to see what's on is phone app, MFD, or the upgraded wired remote? The reason I'd like ability to have a wired remote (or 2 in the case of the BB100) would be the ability to put a remote back in cockpit somewhere to control it without having to go to the helm.

This is an 24 Albemarle express, so I have plenty of cabin wall to mount a box behind the helm. Just very limited dash for an actual head unit or helm remote. I could go up under the helm, to the right next to the cupholder, or flat up on top of the dash. There's plenty of room up in the e-box but I don't know about getting all the wiring for 4 speakers through the hardtop.

UPDATE:
Short version of a longer story...The Ablemarle went by the wayside. I had bought a Fusion MS-RA55 and never installed it in the Albemarle. It stayed in the box in the garage on the shelf along with the Wetsounds XS-650 speakers I bought. We bought a Pioneer in June and I installed all that stuff since the boat didn't have a stereo.

Not 2 weeks after installing the Fusion MS-RA55, the screen went foggy with condensation.

I have the PRV450 but I don't like how unresponsive the buttons can be at times. Thinking of getting the JL head unit since I can't find the Wet Sounds one.

All I can say is how many Fusion head units and remotes we have had to replace under warranty versus Rockford Fosgate.

i had the PRV 175 but ran it through the JBL 4 channel amp to 4 speakers quick and simple. It got the job done and actually put out great sound overall.

I wouldn't expect anything wonderful without an amp.

I had two Fusions get the dreaded moisture behind the screen. Both replaced under warranty. Both were the UD650. The last Fusion I had was the UD750, no problem. I guess 1 out of 3 ain't bad.

Yeah, really looking forward to having them send a new one, only to have it do it again in two weeks, because I know it's going to happen. Is it even worth cutting and re-splicing all the wiring...

I find it moderately acceptable for a cheap millennial dual or something like that. Not a supposedly better quality fusion. And would certainly have been livid if it was a $480 head unit, twice.

If it does it again I'll probably just buy something else. But now I'm really limited by dimensions seeing as I can't go any smaller than the RA55 hole.

You can do a jl media master. They also make a trim ring for it to help fit in holes that are to big or standard dim size.

I went with the JL MM100 in the new boat. Cleaner signal. The JL cannot power speakers. You need to purchase at least one amp.

But the Fusion was a pain in the ass. I had to remove the unit and have the dealer send it back, while I waited for about 10 days with no music and a hole in my helm for them to determine if the unit was defective. Even though the authorized Fusion dealer told them it was.
