Default 8212 question

I am putting in 2 - 8212's now and have the auto pilot, etc..

Should I mount the card reader or is it easy to plug it in the back and disconnect when not needed?

Also, does the Vision G2 work with these units and if so I guess I need to have it mounted on the dash to keep the cars installed?

I would mount the card reader. It does not have to be in the dash, I mounted one in the back of glove box in the dash of a Hydra-Sport 2390, worked great there and out of the way. My present boat I mounted the card reader in the radio box, again out of the way.

Yes the Vision G2 will work in the 8212. update to the G2 Vision HD

I just zip tied mine in a safe place under the dash.....It's not like I need to get at it every trip and it's still easily accessible.

Timely post, Jim..

I too got in on the 8212 sale and am replacing my 4212..

I also have the card reader and am not too keen on cutting that rectangular hole in my dash to fit the card reader. It would be hard to cover it up on down the road if I upgrade again.

On the other hand, I can see this 8212 lasting me for some time. It seems to be a great unit and the last one was in the boat for eight years, so why not this one?

However, I am working on all of this over the next day or so and will be needing it completed by this Friday when we have a trip planned!

I run the Vision V2 card, my reader is mounted inside the console next to the access hatch for the electronics

I just changed over too, the 8212 hole will be a little taller but not quite as wide. You will have to kill about 3/4 " on each side. I have made a bracket to mount the card reader inside the console. If I was only going to use the reader to do upgrades I would not install it , but I like to keep screenshots and keep my waypoints backed up.

Yes - I am putting a starboard sheet, cut to size, over the existing holes where the current units were, to mount the 2-8212's in.

thanks!

You need the card reader for supplemental maps, updates, backups user data and unit profile in case you have your MFD changed out and need to get your settings back quickly and Quickdraw. I added a 7612xsv after the 8212 and of course the 7612 has an internal card reader so no longer really need my external card reader that came with the 8212.

The 8212 is really a great machine, should last a long time to come. Glad you all got a great deal on this MFD.

This was a pleasant early birthday for me...$1250 was a great price.

Also just netted $750 on my 4212. It was a great unit that I had just gotten back from Garmin for an upgrade and new case, as the old ones had some corrosion issues. For them to do that to a six year old unit puts them very high on my list!

For now, I am going to ty wrap the reader to my harness that I can easily access. I'll wait until I get my trim bezel installed and then see how much room I have to permanently mount it. Or remote it to the glove box..

I have had my 8212s for a little over a year now and love them. Wish I could have gotten the price that they went for at the end. But I mounted my card reader inside the console because I use the G2 card and keep my waypoints updated on another card at the end of my trips. To me, it works well in the console and no extra hole in the dash.

I like the way you are thinking... I will do the same and thanks for the feedback!
