Default Comparable units to the Garmin echoMap CHIRP 73sv

Howdy,

I'm new to the board and I'm in the market to upgrade the basic Humminbird fish finder that came with my boat I purchased in August 2015. My fishing will be inland freshwater only with an interest in crappie and bottom feeders (catfish, carp, drum, etc.) until I make an eventual trip to Canada for perch and walleye.

To that point, I was directed towards the Garmin echoMAP CHIRP 73sv with the DownVu/SideVu transducer. This unit has the minimum screen size I'd like and it's right at the top of what I have budgeted ($750 - best I've found online so far). This also includes Garmin's LakeVu HD maps. I'll admit, I'm also a fan of having the option to add the panoptics transducer to this unit, but a cool grand for said transducer makes that unlikely.

So why am I here? There are so many units on the market and just when I think I'm settled on this unit, I come across something that stops me from making the purchase. I'ver read some of the other threads and realize there is an amazing community possessing an incredible amount of knowledge on this site. So I'd like to hear opinions on a few other comparable units to this Garmin from the brain trust. 3, 2, 1...go!

Also, when do the manufacturers normally release their new models and if I waited to purchase would I stand to score this unit cheaper?

Thanks in advance!

Garmin just announced their new lineup and many of the echomap units are on clearance right now. I think other brands are also having sales of last years models in anticipation of new releases.

Check with the board sponsors and look at West Marine, Cabellas, Bass Pro, etc.

By the way, you often wont see the true discounted prices listed on-line if the item is still protected by MRP pricing. You need to call/PM or email.

I have had good dealings with Brian at BBG Marine and Gil/semperfishing really knows his stuff and is very highly regarded.

Simrad GO7 XSE with Totalscan for $749. Insight charts included...for another $100 or so you can add a Navionics+ chip and get all the benefits of autorouting, sonar logs, etc...

The contenders would be:
Simrad GO xse
Lowrance Elite Ti
Humminbird Helix

Which one you preferr would largely depend on personal taste and if you want/ need NMEA2000.
