Default JL Audio speakers, different models?

I want to get a pair of JL Audio 6.5" speakers for my 17' mako, not using an amp now,,prob won't add one. Have had great luck with these before, want something good but not crazy expensive. JL Audio MX650-CCX-CG-WH 6-1/2" Are $175-200, I see other models that look similar but are double the cost. What's the difference? Any recommendations?

The more expensive m series handles more power. Mx is good for what your doing.

MX series is the cheaper line. M series is their top of the line. JL doesn't make entry level so even the MX sounds great. Both do best with external amplification, they list the same 89.5 efficiency. I wouldn't bother with the M without an amp. I'd rather have an amp and the MX than no amp and the M for the extra volume. It's easy to underestimate how loud you need your speakers to get to hear while underway. Wind and engine noise can be tough to overcome.

I believe the MX has a .75inch tweeter vs the 1 inch on the M.

dpdash,
The M series uses a larger 1" dome tweeter versus a .75" in the MX series coaxials. In the larger 7.7" midbass size the larger dome tweeter makes a difference in achieving a perfect balance. However, in the smaller 6.5" size there's not a need for the larger dome as the MX650 already achieves a perfect balance. The more expensive and under-sized M650 actually has a slightly smaller basket and midbass than the MX650. So in almost every case, I prefer the MX650 on balance and given the lower cost.

Great info, thanks! For about the same money, which would be better:

I have a pair of the sw-650's on the conch and have been happy with them since their install 3 years ago. I have a JL system on the lake and bay and have had to send them back for repair but as I did not buy the speakers (they were installed by previous owner 1 month before I purchased the boat) JL would not warranty even though they were well within the warranty period.

I have since only purchased Wet Sounds.

Per the written Wetsounds warranty....the warranty is extended to the original purchaser only and is not transferrable. Also, the warranty is only valid if the product is purchased from an authorized dealer. So the stated warranty policies of both JL Audio and Wetsounds are very similar.
The quality of service with both companies can be enhanced or diminished by the quality of the dealer. In my personal experience, the service from both companies has been exceptional.

Similar quality construction. Similar quality value. They do sound different. JL Audio holds true to a particular sound. The same can be said of Wetsounds. I give points to both for consistency. Your preference for the way a particular speaker is 'voiced' is subjective and personal. There is no substitute for a personal audition with known music material in an equal environment.

Interesting, I did not know that, but as I still own both and JL is the only one to of crapped out I will still recommend Wet Sounds.

I am not sure why either have warranties that are non-transferrable as both are considered high quality items, too bad the companies will not stand behind them.

Here my 2 cents. WS has gone to great lengths to make customers happy. I have seen them help customers with products a year out of warranty. Seen them help with product on a demo boat that was treated pretty rough. They made those customers very very happy.
I have dealt with jl and beyond normal documented warranty it's pretty tough. They have good products so this is not a knock on that. They use the "grey market" to unload a lot of product with the knowledge they won't have to back up with warranty.

If true, that is a bunch of BS. Working on the manufacturing side selling through dealers, that is no way to treat your dealers, or customers.

Thanks for the info, learned a lot

It's the way certain manufactures handle their inventory. They have certain dealers in areas that can't possibly support what they sell. All goes back door. One of them is on here selling. They claim warranty where there is none. WS doesn't play that game. At least not that I can see. Go on eBay look at WS prices. No advantage in pricing.

I don't think peeling the onion back is noise. I like both products and install both. Yes,I have my own tastes and I also use both products.
This has gone on a tangent and not really helpful to the op.

As a side note I am a manufacturer and if a customer has a problem I take care of it. I made it. It has my companies name on it. Even in cases of abuse I give options to keep the customer in my product. Yes, I get yelled at because that's not enough. So I get you can't please everyone but that's about two of three times a year.
