Default Simrad AP44

I'm considering purchasing the Simrad AP 44 pilot. Does anyone have any experience with it...Good or Bad?

The AP44 just came out so you won't find a lot of user reviews yet. It's based off of mature pilot systems from Simrad and B&G so you shouldn't expect a lot of early bug fixes like you might with other brand new products.

That said, software updates are now a way of life in the electronics industry, so be prepared to update when necessary.

Of all the marine electronics, autopilots are the most stable. Rarely are software upgrades released for bug fixes. I think this is due in part to being dedicated products. Its when you start integrating functions that problems occur. The only integration to a reliable autopilot should be navigation data in either 0183 or N2K which is firewalled to contain nothing else. Using MFDs for AP control may work fine for most but confidence goes out the window when you perform an upgrade for another function, not really knowing if it will degrade pilot operation. Bottom line is... someone has to experience a problem, report it and wait for another upgrade to address it, which explains why there are so many updates for MFDs. All that said, Simrad Pilots are the best. The technology is the same as that applied to professional pilots made in Norway and highly respected whereby the others were conceived to meet the recreational market.

I saw the pilot at FLIBS and looked at the Furuno 711c. My friend has the 711c. Good pilot, but pricey. I'm sold on the AP 44. Thanks all!
