Default low frequency verse high frequency

I have a Furuno Netnet system with DDF 1. When I'm in shallow water 2' to 4' feet, very muddy bottom, if you fell overboard you would disappear in the mud. On high frequency my sounder works perfectly but on low frequency the depth is jumping all over the place. Is this normal.

Yes, it's normal. The lower frequency is able to penetrate down in the mud and is probably partly absorbed there, while the higher is reflected at the surface of the mud.
