Default 8212 Splash (startup) screen

Does anyone know the size of that the image has to be on the 8212 splash startup screen? I know you can upload an image but I can't find any size, format, requirements in the manual or online. Found some for the 7612 but I think that screen is wider.

The available space for a user image is:

Width x Height

7x07 = 680x200
7x08 = 880x270
7x10/7x12 = 1080x350
7x16 = 1120x350
8x08 = 480x270
8x12/8x15/GMM 15 = 620x340
GMM 17/GMM 19 = 1100x430
8x22 = 1240x450
8x17/8x24 = 1700x650

I don't understand these proportions because they are not consistent with the display sizes. For example, it says the maximum size for a 7612 is 1080x350. However, the screen resolution on a 7612 per the specifications is 1280x800, in other words somewhat taller in proportion to the width. When I tried using a custom file of the 1080x350 size, I still had the same problem of it getting cut down to a very small rectangle.

None of this is making a lot of sense to me. What am I missing/doing wrong?

Screen resolution doesnt necessarily match up to screen proportions or size. Those are three seperate thiings.

You can have a screen thats 5"x5" or 4"x7" or 9"x12" that has any resolution you want. It could be 640x480 or 1024x800 or what ever. The three things - size, aspect ratio and resolution - are not linked together.

Yes, Garmins splash screen isnt as cool as I had hoped. They cut the size down to fit the area they want you to have and you cannot make it any larger. If you use the wrong size image (pixel count), it gets cut down even more.

Thanks. I thought resolution and aspect ratio would have to be consistent but I guess not.

When I went to redo the splash file, I realized that my problem may well have been that I had sized the image at 1700x650 for the 8617 displays at the main helm but first tried loading it on the 7612xsv at the tower. That would have been too many pixels for the 7612 per the Garmin size guidance and resulted in the unit resizing it to the small rectangle.

I will make a new file limited to 1080x350 and try that on the 7612.
