Default GT51 TH vs GT52 TM transducer, or ??

I have a 24' sterndrive boat that is in a slip for 8 months of the year. I use it for fishing for bottom fish, salmon, and tuna on the west coast. Most of the fish are in 250' of water or less, but occasionally I might be in deeper water looking for bluefin tuna.

Side Vu, Down Vu would be handy to have. What do people recommend? Neither salmon or tuna have swim bladders, and as I have been told mid CHIRP frequencies might be better. However that is just something I read on the internet...

My Garmin 7212 will not do CHIRP, so I am thinking of installing one of the new Garmin 922xs or 942xs as a fishfinder only. I would keep the 7212 for navigation.

The ducer you would want will be the GT 51. The unit you have will do Chirp but not side or clear view so if those are a must you do need to upgrade your MFD. Unfortunately the 942 does not do sideview without an external sounder module so the 1022xsv may be a better option as the sounder you want is in the unit. The upside of going with the 1022 is an extra inch of screen size and no need for separate sounder module. The down side is that the 1022 is a keyed unit over the 942 touchscreen but for some that is not a bad thing.

Looking on the Garmin website, the only way I can use CHIRP with my 7212 is if I purchase a GSD 26. Buying a $1,500 sonar module is inefficient for my use, so I plan on upgrading from my Furuno GP1870F.

If using a GT-51M, I would like to center mount a single transducer on my 24 degree hull. How far forward of the engine would a single transducer have to be?

What speeds can the GT-51M mark fish at?
