STAR MARINE DEPOT (STD):

Does anybody have any ideawhat became of this outfit? I used to call them by phone a year or more ago to check on product availability and pricing withno problems whatsoever. It was aseasy as 'pie'. I couldspeak with someone directly and get the order placed and expedited straight-away. No worries! But not now!

They have an extensive website and a well-publicized toll free number, and at present, they list all three items that I currently need (which would simplify shipping), but you can call their phone number all day and night seven days a week. All you'll get is voice mail. And then the recorded phone greeting tells callers to simply place their order on-line?!#$%^&*? Are thesepeople kidding?

I've gone this route plenty of times with multiple merchants over the years and it simply doesn't work out. You set-up an account, log-in, orderyour items on-line, enter the necessary charge card info and wait to hear, only to learn5-6 days later (when the items fail to arrive) that they didn't have it in stock or theyno longercarry that particular product line or their out of business, yada-yada. In other words, you (the consumer) eat it!

So what's up? Am I being unreasonable here? Am I the only one frustratedwith this sort of garbage? How on-earth do these people expect to stay in business anyway? I find it hard to believe that there are that many patrons out there willing to accepta level of service that is this "sub-standard? But I guess there are! ;?

I should also note (as incredible as it may sound) that I've leftseveralvoice messages for this group over time and no one has ever returned the calls. So in addition to being inconsiderate, they're amateurish and unprofessional as well!Sorry SMD!

Itsinteresting to note thatthere's an altogether different on-line merchantthat also claims to carry all three items we need, and for all intents and purposes, they look completely unrelated to SMD (www.marine-electronics-unlimited.com), yet when you dial their phone number (which is completely different from STDs), you get the exact same phone greeting as the one for STD! Doh! Its obviously a marine consortium of some sort, in business to harvestwe "sheep", right?

I recently outfitted my new boat using StarMarine. I never tried to call them but email back and forth with them.

I had a great experience and it saved me hundreds of dollars.

Here is a partial list of what I bought:
Lowrance Radar Dome
ICOM VHF radio M502
Digital VHF antenna
stereo speakers
antenna mounts
TACO out rigger mounts
ACR ditch bag
Shorepower adapter

I accidently ordered the wrong size speakers and had no problem getting a full refund. I emailed them and quickly got an RMA. I then ordered the correct smaller speakers.

I will be buying from them again!!

Sounds like they disposed of their phones! And that's certainly their right to do! Its also not abig deal when you're right next door to them there in Atlanta (i.e., a quick turnaround if somethinggoes wrong). But e-mail alonesimply won't work forsomeone like usway out here in Hawaii or on the West Coast. The shipping time and costs alone make it unworkable. So we'll just have to keep looking. But I'm glad to hear that you've had a good experience with them. Fact is, I too had very good experiences with them previously (when I could speak with someone beforehand), but apparently those days are gone. Bummer!

Just noticed your post regarding star marine. I posted a similar query on THT on April 27 and have experienced the same frustrations except they don't even respond to my emails!! To make matters worse I am in Australia and am trying to spend around 30K on electronics to have a new cabo fitted out before it goes on the ship. Seems odd because I had them supply everything for my current boat a few years ago and you could always reach them by phone and they responded to emails. Who did you use to supply you in the end? How did prices compare?
