Default 2-3 kw wide CHIRP transducers

I am outfitting a new to me 34' express inboard sportfish and redoing all of the electronics. I plan to go with a Garmin system and the GSD 26. I am thoroughly confused with the transducer options with the low, medium and high frequencies and the "regular", "wide" and "ultra wide" beam widths.

I fish in Texas for marlin, tuna, dorado and wahoo, normal bottom fish in sub 400' (snapper, AJs and some grouper) and also deep drop for grouper, tilefish, barrelfish. While I don't do it much now, I would like to be able to chase swordfish occasionally. So, I would like to have really good views of the top 400' for pelagic fish and "normal" bottom fish and 800' to 1,500 for deep fish. I realize no one transducer will do all of these things well and I will need to make a compromise.

First, do any forum members have personal experience with 2-3 kw CHIRP transducers and, if so, what you would recommend for this application?

Second, are 2-3 kw transducers too big for this boat as a thru hull/fairing block mount and do I have to go with a pocket mount?

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Mike

If using a 2 or 3 kw:
On a 34' you can use a 2 or 3 kw fairing mounted version...but be advised they are 22" long..so for trailing.. not always the best option.

A " in hull " 2 or 3 k is an option for the 2 or 3 kw and GSD-26.
R111C-LH..16 elemetn 2 kw
R599C-LH...25 elemetn 3 kw.

For sub 400'...and then down to 1500' plus.
That is where a HW would be useful due to it wide cone and sensitivity.
The R109C-LHW..would be a very good option....and still have superb deep water use.
The pocket mount version is the CM111C-LHW

no need for a 2 or 3kw in 400 ft water. a 2kw or 3kw ducer will go to 2000ft. with respect to regular, wide or ultrawide, you need to do a little trigonometry. a 40 degree ultra wide in 400 ft of water will give you a cone of almost 300 ft? I am not sure if that is not too wide to know where the fish would be once you see it on the screen?

I've got 2kw and 3kw transducers mounted in fairing blocks under my 32 Cabo. Not a problem at all.

Default Transducer

My boat is a true inboard. It will not be trailered but will be kept in a dry stack. So I need to worry about dry stack bunks and the forklift, but not trailering. My marina deals with this every day and they are good working around transducers. As another poster noted, I am looking for 1,500 foot depth with solid read and marking fish. Deeper is fine but that is what I hope to do.

Any other suggestions in addition to Semper Fi on transducer models to consider? Wide vs regular beam?

Thanks to those who responded so far.

Mike

I put the R109C LHW with a Furuno 295 on Semperfi's recommendation on my 37 Topaz, "Legacy".
After speaking with Gil I also bought both units from him.
I've been a bottom fishing captain off Miami for over 40 years, and have never had anything close to this combo to use before. I see everything under my boat with amazing clarity, and can mark swordfish at 1800 feet at 50 KHZ, mark bottom all the way to Bimini at 18 kts on power level 3, and EVERYTHING under me at 200 KHZ out to over 600 foot of water.
I don't know your budget, but talk to Gil, as he is the real deal and will set you right!

Hi , first post . I have a gsd 26 with a 1kw transducer , tm 265lm and can read the bottom in 800m+ and see fish down there . At 20knts I can read the bottom until about 720m.
Have some pics but looks complicated posting them

Thanks for the help posting those shots . On the first picture there are small schools of fish at about 400 and 600m and just off the bottom ( in the centre of the screen )what we believe is a broadbill because of the bite we were getting , didn't hook up . I had the gain turned right down to get a hard lock on the bottom but using more gain showed up the fish better . That first picture we were drifting at about 2 kts . Second picture we were doing about 10 kts and just shows the drop off .

but what about the same setup at 50 or 100 feet with that LM transducer.

I'm thinking about a B265cLH on my GSD25

Georgia Girl those are impressive shots for a 1kw ducer reaching to those depths. How does that setup do for seeing/separating targets in 1,000'-2,000' down for deep dropping?

Here you go hnmoss. That pic is with the sounder in Low Chirp mode, High Chirp is even better.
WestEnd1, I'm very pleased with the performance of the 265lm showing targets below 1000ft. If I can't find any pics I can certainly take some for you.
