Default Support? from Lowrance.

Ok, I will do a little rant today about Lowrance's support center. First It took about 20 minutes to even get through (Yeah, I know, they are busy this time of year...yada,yada,yada)

My questions were about NauticPath Chips (which I own). First was there is a blank area on the chip around Port St Joe, Fl. in the bay. He verified this on his chip also. I also verified that NOAA charts had data in this area. That brought me to my second question. When and how do we get updates to the nauticpath?

Answer: I don't know....and no offer to let me know...

WOW, what a support line.....

Careful, last time I ranted about Lowrance I got a pile of "mine's fine, must be you" replies. I only get 1/2 hour for lunch, wasn't long enough to get through. My wife went to a dealer and got a different number to call, that worked. Go to a dealer and work from that end, helped for me.

It is not a question if there is a problem, their support guy verified it had the blank area also on his chip. What amazed me is that he could not (or would not) tell me how we get updates or if there were any in the works. I did not ask for them for free or anything like that, I assumed I would have to send in my old chip (which by the way is ridiculous in this internet age, updates could be easily provided over the internet after a verification process) and pay an update fee or something. As for someone telling me 20 minutes is not too long to wait for support, I say B---S---!! If you want to accept that kind of service after you pay them your hard earned money, fine. I do not. I run a business and if I treat my customers like that, I would be ruined quickly. My next FF/GPS may or may not be Lowrance, according to how they treat me.

And that is MY decision.

The best service I have ever received from a ff/gps manufacturer was this last summer from standard horizon. I was crewing on a commercial fishing boat with a larger color gps from SH. We had a chart question. I was never put on hold, and they put up with me, who was in month #2 of fishing. (we lack social skills at that point) I even had to call back several times because my cell phone kept cutting out due to being out on the ocean--never on hold. They had great knowledge of the product and walked me through the menus and helped me set up the gps to meet the needs of the boat. I was very impressed.

I tried calling Lowrance last week with a chip question.. yeah right. I couldn't get through. I just called a dealer and they kinda helped me.

Thank God for being American where else in the world can we just rant! Seriously, there are free updates on the Lowrance update where you can download info onto a chip and install in the unit.

I was able to do this on the little reader that came with my X10c. I had a problem with my temp reading it just wouldn't work. They sent me another transducer free of charge and a card to send back the old one.

You are right its aggravating not to get a timely response, or at least some help when needed. Perhaps you just were unlucky to get someone having a bad day.

If you didn't get a reader with yours give me a shout you can borrow mine for your updates.

Really? Show me where on the site I can get NAUTICPATH updates. You need to READ what I said first. My unit HAS the latest software in it. It is not the unit, but the Nauticpath CHIP that has the problem. I know how to load updates to my unit from the chip.....

Sorry for the snappy response, but I get testy with folks who do not read and think before talking...

Dubble or anybody else,

I am seriously considering purchasing the Lowrance with the Nautic Path chip; is this a mistake? I have Garmin now but I like the resolution on the Lowrance.

From what my experience has been, it would be, but In this day and age, support is becoming non-existent with all companies. You will soon be talking to someone in India whom you cannot understand, and they will have no idea what you are asking....no matter who you buy from. Everyone has become numb to it and accepts it as normal. NOT ME. But I will be gone soon, I am just a grumpy old man that used to live in a world where service counted.....

Just signs of the times.....

I bought the nautic path chip for my lms 339. The dealer in Juneau recommended it. I plugged it in and took a look at some of the waters I know extremely well. It seem very accurate, espessially in the outer coast waters. The inland waters did not as detailed as nobeltech is, on the laptops.

I also like the fact that you can zoom in to .2 of a mile. Now if I could just figure out how to make it show fathoms instead of feet. I hope it can do that, because it drives me crazy looking at the depths in feet.

I got the Globalmap 6600 HD about 2 weeks ago, the Nauticpath map in it is over 2 years out of date (we had a major realiegnment of the river channel where I fish 2 winters ago). At the Lowrance website the update available for my unit lists what it does but says nothing about it updating the maps on the hard drive. Haven't tried calling Lowrance yet, but sounds like it will probably be a waste of time. I will try soon though when I actually have some free time, we'll see...
