Default Garmin 741xs Gain Adjustment

I'm new to the forum, but saw a wealth of Garmin info here so thought I'd ask a question. I have a Garmin 741xs that I installed a year ago, all of the updates are the latest available. I typically fish for salmon and sturgeon, and the unit has picked up both very well, showing the arches of marked fish. Recently I went on a bass and perch trip, and the unit wasn't returning signatures of fish, even though we were jigging vertically over obvious schools while anchored up.. After a little internet research it seemed as if I need to adjust the gain in order to pick up the signatures of the smaller targets I was after. I followed the manual directions which say to go into the sonar screen, select menu, then select gain or brightness, then adjust from there. When I go into the sonar screen and try to select the menu button on the touch screen, it beeps as if I am not allowed to use that feature. The rest of the screen is responsive to the touch. Is there a lock feature or something I have to override in order to access the gain, and is that the adjustment I'm looking for to mark smaller fish?

Welcome to THT. Although I can't answer your question right this minute, I can look tomorrow morning. I have two 741xs installed so I can take a look.

Someone else may be able to offer assistance too.

Is the Gain button greyed out or does it look like the other buttons?

My 7610 only beeps at me when I miss the button and press in the wrong spot.

You might want to call customer support. They actually answer the phone and they can walk you through the settings.

Just curious, how deep of water were you jigging in? Even vertical jigging is shallow water, the targets may be outside to cone angle. Just a thought.

I was in about 40 feet of water. Just to check, I was jigging directly below the transducer, picking up fish but showing nothing on the monitor. Yrral3215: When I try to select the menu button in the sonar screen, the unit beeps as if I'm not allowed to select it. I haven't been able to access that menu to see if the gain button is greyed out. Thanks for the help, I'll give customer support a call.
