Default P79 transducer install prep?

Getting ready to install the in hull P79 transducer in my dusky. The directions state to sand off any paint or coating at the mounting location. Going to be putting this in my bilge area which is white gel coat. I've seen some pictures of others mounted were the white was still there. My question is, do I need to sand all the way through the the white gel coat to bare fiberglass or just scuff it up so the silicone will adhere? I would rather not sand through the gel coat if possible.

Thanks

With the gel coat... just make certain it is clean and bubble free.......and lightly sand just the area of the install with fine grit..

You can first try out the unit using a plastic bag of water etc.

What semperfifishing said. And just make sure the area where it will be sealed is nice & smooth and no bumps or ridges so the base ring sits nice and flat.

Sanding is mainly for the adhesive to help stuck to hull, just enough to ruff it up. I used 200 grit and 4200.

Thanks for the help. Just ruffed it up with 150 and glued with ge 2. Of course 15 minutes later rain came out of nowhere. Hopefully no water reaches it
