Most of the new-ish Garmin handhelds are compatible with their g2 (marine) and lake charts. Models I would suggest to consider (all of which can display g2 marine charts):

GPSMAP 78s (floats if you drop it in the drink)
GPSMAP 64s
eTrex 30 (small unit, convenient for carrying around but screen size is limited)

You can find them with prepackaged Topo Maps. Either go that route or buy maps for your preferred region(s)...the basemap that comes in the units is pretty much useless.

If you have a smart phone, another option would be too buy an navigation app for your phone at the fraction of the cost of a dedicated hand held. Thats what I did a number of years ago and have been very happy with the results.

Navionics app on my iPhone or droid by far the best gps backup there is on the market, I bought it for 10 bucks and that thing does more then a 200 buck handheld ever could

The Garmin 78sc seems to be a popular unit for a hand held GPS. I would recommend taking a look at those.
