Default Newbie Advice...

Hey guys,

I'm in need for some electronics that will fit in a new 23 ft center console. My main goal is to be able to fish some electrics down to about 1000ft. Also, need a Gps chartplotter. I assume an all in one system would be what I want. I'm not rich so I really can't spend several thousand dollars for a top notch system.

It's been a LONG time since I bought electronics for a boat so I am basically in need of schooling. I'm fishing for opinions of what you guys think where I should start to look. I looked at the Simrad website and honestly....I was confused as hell.

So anybody want to offer some free advice

A Garmin 741xs and a transom mounted GT23 is a good place to start...under $1k.

Or a Furuno FCV 588 and a TM260 for sonar..and a stand alone Garmin chartplotter.

Both of these paint a good image down to...... let's say 800' ?

BTW, what's the deal with these CHIRP transducers? Again, the last unit I owned was an old color stand alone Furuno (I forget the model) that was a staple for many years. So, I'm REALLY out of touch.

Are you bottom fishing in those depths or are you trolling? What species are you fishing for?

I'm definitely using it for bottom fishing. But, honestly....I don't know enough to tell you a species I am targeting. I just want to get into deep dropping for different types of fish and learn from there. I can say that I can't mortgage my home to buy Rods and Reels. I want to get into it fairly cheaply...if it's possible.

Are you a button or touch screen fan?

It doesn't matter. I would prefer the touchscreen but again, I don't want to break the bank. Also, It's going in a 22 foot console so room may be an issue. I may put an electronic box in the hardtop but I'm not sure.

I'd get used lowrance has gen 2 . You can get twin 8" screens fairly cheap and better to use than a single larger screen. I run 2 12" and one 10"

The question that I have with the Echomap 75/dv is it touch screen or will I have to scroll thru the alphabet to name a way point?
