Default northstar 6100i data transfer

I exported the data out to a dat file and would like to put it in a garmin 72xx unit. Anyone have a program to convert it over to the correct file format?

Also have do you wipe the 6100i clean? Just the waypoints need cleared out. I do not want to hard reset it really if I can help it.

Thanks

Check http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

I just went through a similar process transferring nearly 500 WPs from a N/S 952 to 2 Simrad NSS's and a Go7XSE. But in a little more convoluted fashion .

Because the 952 only transfers between N/S chartplotters, not to a PC or other GPS, I used a custom transfer cable ( from Max Marine Electronics ) to transfer all WP's to my N/S 6000i. but couldn't get them directly from the 6000i to my 64 bit laptop.

. Fortunately the 6000i allows transfer directly to a Compact Flash card...

I used a multi-card reader to load the WPs on the CF card onto the laptop via USB.

That created a named document file on the computer. (OK you are already that far now...)

Then I opened the GPSVisualizer website and used their free system to import that named WP file (still .dat format) and have it export that data in the fairly universal .gpx format to the card reader with a micro SD card . And also sent it to my laptop's Document files in that usable .gpx format for add'l backup.

I wasn't sure whether the Simrads would really accept the WP data, but I slipped in the micro SD card to the master NSS12Evo2 2nd slot, and on the Way[points page I clicked on Import and all the N/S 952 WPs were successfully loaded in about a second.
And since the other Simrads were networked they immediately shared and stored the same WP file data. . Oddly , however, the tower's GO7XSE ( connected only by NMEA2k since it does not have Ethernet capability) only stored about 160+ WPs in its file I think, Hmmmm? ... LOL.

I described all that for those THT'ers who have been asking about Northstar to Simrad transfers.

But I think the GPSVisualizer will work for you, and it costs nothing and does transfer in one batch large numbers of WPs (and I think routes though I didn't do those). It also lets you see all your WPs on its own provided chart if so desired and I think that is the website's main purpose if not mine. Printable too... I think. All free. .

I had 1st tried the premium paid version of GPSUtility and found it so non-user-friendly I gave up on it .
The GPSVisualizer was incredibly simple and fast - amazingly easy. .

Hopefully like many or most GPS's including at least some Garmins , your 72xx Garmin has the ability to also accept .gpx format as a perfectly good secondary format along with its proprietary Garmin format. If so, you just need a spare memory card of proper type... or perhaps it will transfer via USB to the 72xx once the format is converted?

Not sure about your 6100i , but I'm pretty sure on my 952's and 6000i, short of the reset one can only WP/Edit/ Erase one WP at a time.
My NSS's allow erasing all waypoints at once and that makes me a bit nervous in case I were to touch the wrong spot when tired.

Sorry for the length of the post.
Let us know how the rest of your transfer works out.

TTaxi, thank you much for the reply. That worked fine going to a GPX. Do you know a way to get it to an older Garmin 52xx series that wants an ADM file type?

Thank you again for the time on that reply.

w-r-g , I'm glad that worked for you too.

I have no experience converting into .adm format files , but a quick Google search of
" convert GPS .gpx format to Garmin .adm "
shows one of several likely effective sites for conversion and transfer to or from Garmins is "expertgps.com" , but the home version is $75.

I suspect your best (or least expensive) bet may be a Garmin to Garmin, or Garmin-computer-Garmin transfer using Garmin's free "Homeport" software ( I've never used. ) Using a memory card as agent may still be the easiest way.

Disclaimer: It should be obvious by now, there are loads of more computer and Garmin-savvy people on THT than I. Probably everyone ! But I do like figuring how to beat, or at least make peace with some of these machines for brief moments when I get lucky or good help.
