Warning - we bought a SPOT Trace at the Miami Boat Show in February. We have not received rebate YET. When you contact SPOT, they refer you to another company that handles their rebates.

We are also on our second Trace. We got it because it could be wired directly into the boat instead of dealing with dead batteries. This summer we cruise 100+ locks in NY and Canada. Each time we locked through, the SPOT would shut off and not notice we started moving again. The only option was to power it off and then back on.

Just one disappointed user.

I have 2 with no issues. Feel free to spend upwards of $5k for a GOST system.

Brian,
We liked the SPOT because it is inexpensive for the annual service. Most of our boating friends have a SPOT of one type or another, so our owners club has links for all of the SPOTs so we can know where each other are. We also give our SPOT address to family and friends who watch where we travel each day.
I have exchanged three emails with SPOT customer service today trying to get to the bottom of the rebate delay. The most recent email tonight asked if we had contacted Staus-Now (the company that handles the rebates for SPOT), after we had documented our conversation with Status-Now in the prior email to SPOT.
On October 23rd, we were told the check would be mailed October 30. Today SPOT advised us the check will mailed December 3rd.

i dunno... I don't think buying the cheapest life saving device is a good idea. I've seen too many with spotty service with SPOT. Wasn't it made because the platform could no longer handle voice calls on the network?

I think permanently installed tracking device + epirb is the way to go. I have a plb too though. and a 6 man raft. and a sat phone. If something bad happens a whole lot of people are going to know where I am or have a means to reach me!

Boat Command appears to be GSM (cell phone) only, correct?

There are lots of cell phone towers around, but even more water....

Its not a life saving device but a systems monitor , control and security device. An epirb and PLBs would cover on that side of things

Useless off of S. FL, I get cell coverage for about 7-9 miles out and the GPS tracks are nice to see how far and what our path was, typical these days is 15-30 miles out seeking Ms. Mahi.

I already bought 2 from you and for security purposes they would surely stop a thief if you got him between the eyes with one say at 10 feet.
