Angry Garmin 404 - error code (radar not working)

We have a inoperable Garmin 404 (approximately 3 years old - install date) mounted on a 2015 35 Edgewater. Boat is in Virginia. Have been told the unit is out of warranty, Garmin will not service, and Garmin does not support with parts to outside vendors. It threw an error code (7 or 8 if I recall). The capacitor was replaced a year ago and the unit worked.
Question: Is there someone that can effectively work on these units that knows what they are doing?
Was told a replacement unit was $4K ($2K for dome model).
Much appreciate any and all help.
Chris (Dad's boat)

Not sure where you are in VA, but I just went through a similar issue (error code 6), was out of warranty, so decided to replace with something else (Furuno). Anyway, Mid-Shore Electronics our of Cambridge, MD is an authorized Garmin warranty/repair center. I would suggest you give them a call to discuss your issue. This will be the second install they have done for me on 2 different boats. They do great work!

Thanks for the reply bluefin2na.
The boat is kept in White Stone. We are receiving error code 8 at the Garmin head unit. What gets me is the boat has less than 20 hours and the unit craps out. My father has an electronics guy he likes, and it appears he is going to replace the unit with a Garmin dome unit. Very disappointing...

That 404 was introduced in 2004, and they stopped making it in 2009 (so it couldn't have been "new" in 2012 as you suggest) when they went to the xHD , which they stopped making in 2013 when they started the xHD2.
Most manufacturers stop supporting product when the parts supply is exhausted, and that appears to have happened with your 404.

I believe error cade 8 is failed scanner motor.
It knows this due to not getting the ships heading flash signal from a reed switch triggered by a magnet on the rotary joint.
The usual culprit is worn out brushes which are easy to replace.
However if you are adamant the radar has only done 20 hours it must be something else but look anyway.
Usually there are 2 brush holders on the side of the motor, you may even find spares taped to the motor as they are a consumable item.

The Garmin 404 has been out of manufacture for a long time. So that GMR 404 of yours is certainly much older than 3 years. In fact the replacement to the GMR 404 the xHD has been replaced by the xHD2 as well.

So you have a really old machine . I believe Garmin will still fix that pedestal for a fixed fee, have you called Garmin and to get the cost to repair the GMR 404?

As the age seems questionable does the scanner rotate at all after the warm up period. If only for a couple of revolutions. Is the scanner loose when lifting up and down at one end indicating worn rotary joint bearings? Has it electronically parked itself at zero degrees as per your photo, facing forward? Has any work been done on boat that could have damaged the radar cable?

Would like to help and give you some basic DYI procedures.

This thread has me thinking...Welcome to the Garmin mentality - yup, you spent $4000 of your hard earned money on a radar, how dare you expect it to last more than 5 years. I would tell dad to keep the Garmin as a chartplotter, make the radar an anchor, and buy a 10 old Furuno Navnet 1 w/6kw open array. Not only will he be impressed with the clarity, sensitivity, and detail, but it will last a very very long time.

All jokes aside, this is the reality of a lot of these newer electronics, and unless you're buying the JRC-made HD-digital radars that Simrad has out or a Furuno, don't expect them to last a long time...they don't.

This radar is a lot older than 5 years. most likely more than 10 years old.

Garmin has not even been making open array units for 10 years. You certainly could have bought a 404 brand new 5 years ago.

Garmin radar reliability is an issue, nothing to get defensive about...it's well known and documented.
