Default Fluxgate compass and marpa

I am replacing my old Raymarine system with a Garmin 7610 but intend to keep the Raymarine autopilot which has a fluxgate compass for heading information. Will this work in the Garmin system for MARPA purposes or will I need a new high performance heading sensor.

Thanks

It should work fine assuming you can figure out how to connect it via nmea 0183 and enable the proper sentences on the garmin side. The rm ap's use the info from the compass so no reason garmin shouldn't (unless they insist on garmin proprietary nmea sentences for heading).

Garmin support should be able to tell you what heading codes it expects, then rm support can tell you if they xmit those.

I called Garmin and spoke with a very helpful techie who tried to get some information on the sentences sent out by the FLUXGATE but she could not fine the information. She suggested that I call RM for the information. I do not plan to do this as I can live without MARPA. When I install the Garmin radar I will see if the FLUXGATE sensor will work. Will report back.

I have the same set up only I have a 5212. I just purchased an Actisese NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2K converter as my AP is an old ST5000 then I also needed to get a sea talk to sea talk NG converter. Not sure what AP you have but it. Can be done.

Keep in mind that to get good MARPA and Autopilot performance, you need a 10hz heading source. The Actisence converter, unfortunately, doesn't provide heading at 10hz. The furuno converter can do it, as can the Simrad AT10HD. But the Simrad is limited to 4800 baud, and ONLY transmits heading - nothing else.

I am now told that my fluxgate has a 5k heading sensor that will not work for marpa purposes. With the 7610 Chartplotter and the Garmin 24 inch dome radar. Lie to know if there is a work around for this.

Thanks

I have an older Raymarine autopilot, but rather than using it's heading sensor for MARPA purposes, I installed a KVH electronic compass. Took it's MNEA0183 output into my 4210s. Did not have to worry about which sentences to enable. It all worked fine right out of the box.
