Default Simrad NSS7 vs NSS7 EVO2

I fish in 1' - 10' of water. I have 2010 verado 200 motor. I am about to upgrade electronics and I am trying to decide between the older NSS7 and the NSS7 evo2.

Side scan and structure scan and basically any fishfinding sonar is useless to me due to how shallow I fish. I really only use a transducer at all to mark depth. The biggest bang for my buck is going to be in the GPS/ChartPlotter as well as the engine information.

I currently have my Verado connected to a MercMonitor and I would like to confirm that I can jump directly from the MercMonitor to either of the above mentioned units and get engine Data?

Also keeping in mind the depths that I fish in, what would be an appropriate transducer which will be used basically only as a depth finder?

All this being said is there any reason to spend the extra 300 on the EVO2 version?

Thanks for any info THT

I bought an NSS8 to serve a very similar function. I did not require sophisticated sonar capabilities, and went with an Airmar P79 so I didn't have to drill/cut any holes in the boat. To my surprise, the P79 has worked flawlessly at all speeds, and provides all the sonar capabilities I'll ever use.

Evidently, with the proper cable, the NSS8 will show Yamaha engine data, but I'm not sure about Mercury. If you already have a network, the connection will be easy. I'm actually considering complementing my NSS8 with an NSS7. A buddy of mine sent me a link to Defender, who has them for $599, which in my opinion, is a bargain for the technology.

Defender NSS8 $750. You'll be much happier with that than the NSS7.

Defender is 100% legit...I've ordered thousands of dollars worth of stuff from them over the years...They give priority to locals during the warehouse sale, so I won't know whether I can actually get the unit or not until Monday...I don't have high hopes, because at $550, I think they'll sell through them pretty quickly...

Why so? just the size difference?

Also you Comm you mentioned the Airmar P79 did you need a special adaptor cable to connect it to the NSS8? I didn't see the ducer as an option at Defender...I guess ill have to go with Amazon then.

Both units provide the same functionality, but the 1" difference in the screen size does make a difference if you frequently plan on having multiple windows open...I plan to use my NSS8 for mapping, and the NSS7 as a sonar...Plus, having a back-up is nice...Worst case, I have my iPhone with Navionics as an emergency back-up...

This is the P79 sounder unit...They make a bunch of different versions to match your device/connector type...You'll need some of the pink, RV antifreeze to install it...No special cables or connectors needed...There's a ring that allows you to adjust/compensate for your specific hull deadrise...Running the cable to the helm is the hardest part of the process...Just make sure you don't mount it in front of strakes, through hull pickups, or anything else that might disturb water flow in front of it...

Actually, YOU made ME spend $550...If I hadn't seen this damned thread, I never would have checked back at Defender to see the sale price!

For the money, I don't know how you can beat the performance and features....

that was my thoughts as well..I was gonna take my time and do a ridiculous amount of unnecessary research like I always do, but then at 550 and 119 for the xducer....I just couldn't sit on it.

One thing to consider is the NSS 7 isnt a 7 inch screen. Only 6.4 which is pretty small. The NSS 7 evo2 is a true 7 inch screen. The NSS 8 is an 8 inch screen that really looks quite a bit bigger to me than the NSS 7 or evo 7. I would get the 8 if only a few hundred more.

I did consider the screen size and almost jumped up to the 8, but I figured if its an issue I could actually get a second 7 or whatever I decide and tie them together.
