Default autopilot ?

Don't know anything about autopilots per se.How does one find out which autopilot to get for my boat. Reason I'm asking is I may try to get one in the future and want to know what I'm getting into. I've read here on THT ref the autopilots how they are useful but cant seem to find any real specifics as to how to go about chooseing one for specific boat etc. If it helps im getting the new garmin 7610xsv as well as the 18xhd radar installed when able. thanks.

I have the garmin radar, you will love it!
If you are going Garmin I'd look at their AP models.

Personally I'm going with the Si-Tex SP110 due to low cost and it's apparently bullet proof.

Assuming your boat has hydraulic steering, you'll need an AP that can drive a reversing hydraulic pump (essentially an AP-controlled helm pump). The pump size will need to be selected according to the hydraulic volume and arrangement of your steering cylinder(s).

This is a common arrangement, so all the major AP players will have effective and reliable offerings for your boat. You'll need to choose a brand & model that has the best blend of features, MFD integration, and cost.

Garmin APs integrate very well with Garmin MFDs, and enable things like 1-click autorouting. Garmin also offers "shadow drive", which is a strange name for a feature that automatically disengages the AP if you steer manually.

On the other hand, Garmin APs are expensive, and full of proprietary parts and interfaces. If neither of those drawbacks bother you, you'll just need to decide which Garmin AP you need. Their latest GHP 20 system with their "smart pump" will almost certainly work for you, but it is expensive even by Garmin AP standards.

If you want a more modular, generic AP system, and you can live without "shadow drive" and autoroute following, there are other good options out there. Simrad is well known for their AP performance, and other makers (like Raymarine and Si-Tex) have APs with good performance-to-cost ratios.

BTW.... have a furuno 1650 DGPS and a Garmin 741XS......
