Default a78 package w/trans.

I bought the a78 package from Raymarine. It has down view and side scan. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how deep they had there's in saltwater? Not side to side but down. I fish offshore (deep dropping).
Anyone had any issues with them?
I went through the whole DSM300 issue and was wondering about these.

Thanks, David.

You probably have the CTP 100 transom ducer.
That will work with targets to about 500' to 600' with accuracy.
Bottom tracking a bit deeper.

Yes it comes with the CTP 100.
Is there anything I can do to incress the depth? Add CP300 box or change trans.?
I know some units only go so deep no matter what you put on them. I guess some can't push the 1000 W trans.

Dabood,

How do you like the A78? Any reason you did not go with a Garmin unit? I too am leaning towards the A78 as I am familiar with using Raymarine. But most people I talk to push Garmin.

I just got it, not even in yet. I have the E90 now so I'm getting another for side by side on dash. I like the side scan and down view, I figured since I have Raymarine already I'd stick to them.
Just hoping I didn't wast my money if it won't go past 600.
I want it for the ledge over in Bahams.

That 800' shot makes me feel good. If I can get that I'd be pleased. How deep does the side scan work?
Is there any box or better trans I can add on and keep the side/down veiw?
I 'd really like to get the max out of it.

You cannot add different transducers to the a78 for chirp.....too low of power.

The Sidvision is the same transducer Downvision. So 600' to each side is achievable.

The new CP-470 will FINALLY allow for a single use Chirp transducer. That unit will allow for a number of different transducers. The best part is that it will absolutely network into the A78 you have now with a single Raynet cable. So, that would give you dynamite Downvision, Sidevision, baby chirp AND full chirp.

CME, if I know I will only be fishing in 180-200 feet I should set my transducerto that range? Will that give me a better picture? I'm installing an E127 and downvision with the cp100.

Honestly, I can't imagine why it would be necessary with the CP100. The Cp100 has a great history of working really really good. Truth be told, many of the internal software logarithyms are being applied to all the new boxes. The 600w internal sounder in the e127 may be a different story. The traditional sounder would definetly benefit from manually setting the depth. Which transducer is that e127 being used with?

As much as I love that unit, the internal sounder just hasn't worked well with that transducer. If it were me I would order the e125 and then buy the Cp370 (new box) to get a 1kw capability. Of course the e127 is only 600 watts. I 100% guarantee you it will perform much much better. I had a chance to speak with one of the engineers that aided in the development of the newer boxes and am convinced that the newer boxes are dynamite.

I also just purchased the a78 to upgrade my existing package. It was my understanding that the unit is capable of DownVision only; the unit has a CPT-100 sonar module built in coupled with transducer. I believe you need a unit that can be coupled with at least the external CP-200 sonar module for sidevision.

The unit came with a transom mount transducer but I am going to purchase the CPT-120 thru-hull transducer. The installation instructions are not great; I'm hoping the shaft has similar dimensions to the previous Raytheon (old old old) transducer so it will fit in the existing cut.

Two things....

The A78 is Chirp & Downvision

Second, the installation manual is quite extensive. -----its 44 pages long!

1. Yes. Chirp & Downvision. I meant no included Sidevision.
2. Yes. The link you provided had a good installation manual.
