Default Convince me to spend more $: Garmin 741xs vs 70dv

Thanks to a tremendous amount of help from the good folks of THT, I think I'm zeroing in on the Garmin 741xs w/ TM150.

However, I'm seeing some pretty sweet close out deals for the Garmin Echo70dv for about half the cost of what the 741xs will cost. The sale price points on the 70dv include a transducer.

Again, my main use will be striper fishing less than 100ft of water, on a 20ft CC.

So, why is the 741xs set-up worth spending the extra dough?

If the bullying technique didn't work I did an echo map 70s because I didn't want n2k or radar. So I went that route. Just depends what you want it to do

The Garmin 70dv that were highly discounted just a short time ago seem to be all gone. The only ones I'm seeing available now are near the price of the 741xs.

I was hoping to pick up a 70dv to go with the 741xs. I bought a 741xs from Gill when the that price was under $900. I waited a little too long to pull the trigger on the 70dv.

Now I'm thinking to wait until next winter to pick up another unit to go with the 741xs that I have now. Maybe something with side scan and can be networked with the 741xs.

Good luck on finding a highly discounted 70dv.

see the West Marine thread. If you don't need radar, networking or Video in, the deal at $599 cant be beat.

Just my 2 cents....

I bought a 741xs from Gil at a smoking price - $895.00 a few weeks back. Pairing it with a 70s that's on the way.

$295 more than the WM price but its not discontinued and has tons more upside. With a TM-150 you are probably said and done for $1150 with Chirp, linking motor info, tunes, radar, video etc...

My 188C is just starting to do funky things after 12 years, so you might still have the one you decide on in 10 years from now and who knows what accessories might be available then... but you stand a better chance of being able to utilize / link the 741xs should someone make something that catches your eye...

Yes, I just saw the other West Marine post. I already called my local West Marine store. They have 4 in stock. Hope to get one tomorrow morning before they are gone.

Advantages of the 741xs...
NMEA 2000 compatible
Sirius Weather / radio compatible
2 network ports
Radar compatible
Supports Fusion link
Meteor Audio compatible
Garmin Helm compatible
Built in single band CHIRP
1 kw /600 watt traditional sonar..vs 500 watts dv
BNC video input
Fully networkable with the new 76XX xsv units.

Some good common areas between the two units include wireless connectivity, both can use the GCV -10, both have sonar recording, AIS / DSC capable.
And both will have many years of continued Garmin support.
