Default Garmin 18 xHD Opinions

I've got a Garmin 840xs chart plotter and would like to get a radar that integrates well with the system. The primary use will be for navigation in fog & early am fishing trips on the coast of Maine.

The 18 HD had a bad reputation, but the marketing is that the 18 xHD is improved.

Any real world experience from owners of the xHD?

Appreciate it!

Dan

I have only used mine on 2 trips, so I am really I undecided. I had a furuno navnet 1 setup prior. I will say that it is at least equal to my old system, my first impression was certainly not omg look at this hd radar. I am concerned with its ability to pickup the smaller harder targets like a 19ft center console. It picks up the smaller metal buoys and channel markers just fine. I looked at both the 18 and the 24 which both put out the same power 4k watts, just wasn't sure that the bigger dome and few more inches would make much of difference.

They both put out the same power but the beamWidth on the 24 is 3.7 vs 5.2 for the 18 which should be better for target sep.

The only reason i know this is because i too am looking for the best dome. From what i have gathered, the (Simrad,B&G or the Lowrance) 4G with its 2.7 beamwidth is the best as of right now.But we all know that could change tomorrow

The narrower the beam of the radar, the sharper the returns and the unit will fair better when displaying small objects.

The X HD 24 will give you better separation of object but I do not believe it will be any better at picking up a 19ft CC.

Seems like beam width would become more significant at greater distances (is this true?). Is target sharpness similar within a few miles?

I installed the 18xHD along with an 840xs in May of last year. It has worked perfectly. I used it this past Saturday.

I know it isn't the highest resolution radar available, but it certainly shows what I need to see. Kayakers show up well. I am satisfied.

Exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for from an owner.

Thx!

Any other 18 xHD owners willing to share their experience (good or bad) with the radar?

I just got the 18xhd but I really wanted the 24xhd for the narrower beam width. I made a couple of cardboard mock ups and realized the 24 just looked way to large for the T-top for my liking even though it was only 5" larger than the 18. I am installing it this weekend and I hope it works well.
