Smile external gps antenna for garmin echomap 50

Hello all, new member here. I've tried to research in this forum about the possibility of retrofitting a remote gps antenna to an echomap 50. I'm in Tampa Bay and I expect to be there on some rainy nights. I love the features on the 50 dv, but I want to be able to get under cover as well. An internal antenna will degrade in performance under canvas. Kinda long winded first post, but, hey, I mean well. Anyone have information about this. Thanks----Billy

Modern GPS receivers can deliver high accuracy even if they're not directly exposed to the sky. For example, many of us have pilothouse boats with fiberglass (and headliners etc) between our plotters and the sky, yet we see high GPS precision from internal antennas.

I say try your 50DV under canvas to see if the degradation is even noticeable. I suspect you'll find that an external antenna is not necessary.

Thanks. I'll try it.
