Default SPOT Gen3 Good enough? For:

After reading a discussion about locator devices I would like to buy one to add to my VHF and cell phone aboard. I plan to use it attached to my inflatable flotation belt in hopes it would work if I'm in the water, not on the boat. SPOT manual says water proof up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. That does not sound very water proof to me.

What do you think? Some other unit a better choice? I could be as far as 30 miles offshore alone. I don't think I need all the email service tracking just a panic button for the worst of what can happen. If I am high and dry, on the boat I will use cell phone for SeaTow. I would like a simple rescue beacon device that works while bobbing in the water with a life jacket on.

Any suggestions for a (hopefully not extremely expensive) personal, clip on, water proof, gps, signaling rescue device? Will the SPOT Gen3 do? Price, size, and clip is good on Spot. Not sure about the battery system though. Seems it's use may include running all the time. I would want one with non leak batteries that you turn on when you need it...if that exists. Can SPOT be used as a non tracking, turn it on if you need it or must one sign up for the tracking system and pay a fee?

I'm a long time boater but new to these devices due to simply never using them but being out there alone at an older age now prompts me to seek one..and they seem much cheaper than they once were.

As an owner and long time user, I would say that the SPOT has its place ... and that would be in 2nd after a PLB. If their program has remained unchanged in recent years, the "track progress" function requires an optional 12 month subscription service ($149?), and that's really the reason I have a SPOT in the first place (not to be confused with 2nd place).

I have a plb too as my main source for an emergency, but really like the spot 3 bc others can be watching your tracks and know exactly where the last tracks were in case of an emergency. There is also an ok button incase you have to come back in on one motor or stay out longer bc fishing is really good and your loved ones will know you are not in danger. It also has a preprogrammed message you can add thatmight sayheading home now.

Got it..PLB first. More powerful, no contract, does not operate till turned on, similar to EPIRB.

I have acr plb. I just got the Delorme inReach SE. It is not much more than the spot. They now have a plan that you can turn on and off at will with no penalty (30 day min) at $15 per month.
