Default ICOM NMEA GPS hookup?

Just got a great deal on an Icom M412. Started putting it on the boat and I cant figure out how to hook it up to the External GPS on my HDS12. Anyone ever run into this?

No, you should be able to connect in the following order:
ICOM - HDS
Red - Yellow
Shield - Blue
White - Orange
Shield - Green

That has worked for me, but if you've done that and yours isn't working then you could connect the Shield from the HDS to the Shields of the ICOM. Hope this helps.

If you have a GPS receiver that is external to the Lowrance HDS-12, it is probably a NMEA-2000 device. The ICOM IC-M412 is not a NMEA-2000 device. The two cannot directly communicate.

You will have to interface the ICOM IC-M412 to the NMEA-0183 serial port on the HDS.

On some of the larger HDS models, there are two configurations available for the COM PORTS (as Lowrance calls them). Verify the settings.

You will have to configure the HDS to send the proper NMEA sentences on the COM PORT outputs to the radio.

A simple method for accomplishing the interconnection of NMEA-0183 devices is presented at

Yes the external GPS antenna for the HDS Touch is N2K, so you will need a Starter Kit (000-0124-69) to connect the external GPS Antenna. The ICOM has a NMEA0183 connection. You could connect the ICOM directly to the Data cable that came with the HDS or if you hate money, you could get a NMEA0183 to NMEA2000 converter and connect it to your new back bone. Remember the ICOM runs at 4200 baud rate so you'll need to double check the HDS's NMEA 0183 settings
