Default Upgrade to Lowrance CHIRP

Hello everyone,

I am currently running Lowrance HDS 7 gen2 touch.
I fish from 30feet to 200feet of saltwater.
I use 200kHz transducer most of the time.

CHIRP sonar for Lowrance has been there for quite a time and I am interested to get a try of it.

There are three options for me:
1. Add a Lowrance Elite unit with CHIRP
2. Add sonar hub to current gen2 touch
3. Go for Lowarnce Gen 3

I would like to know:
1. Is there any difference in outcome in terms of resolution and sonar picture quality with the above three different set up, if I say all choose a 7 inch unit.
2. What CHIRP sonar transducer should I use and compatible with the above choices? Lower, Medium, High or combo?
Lowrance brand or Airmar?
3. Would I see a big different after I upgrade to CHIRP vs my current 200kHz sonar?

Thank you

Option 1 will only use the Navico skimmer or down scan transducer. Not a huge difference for you.

SonarHub and Gen3 can use any of the higher quality transducers, and you can choose the best transducer for your fishing conditions. But the sonar in the HDS2 is a good sonar with good resolution. I wouldn't update just to get CHIRP. If would wait until you have more reasons to update if I were you. Unless you are flush with money and don't mind the expenses. If that is the case, go with the Gen3. It has the latest and greatest sonar that Navico makes. True simultaneous structure and CHIRP with that unit.

Add a SonarHub and B75H and LSS-2 transducers. HDS Gen2 Touch and SonarHub combo also supports CHIRP and StructureScan at the same time. HDS Gen2 Touch will in the coming days get a software update with the Gen3 graphics look and menu structure, the unit is also fatser with the new software.

HDS Gen3 and HDS Touch with SonarHub will give identical sonar performance.

Yes, B75H and a CHIRP sounder will give a major improvement in sensitivity and resolution.

Nice to hear that HDS Gen3 and HDS Touch with SonarHub will give identical sonar performance.
I have LSS-2 already but I seldom use it.

B75H is a thru hull 600w transducer.
I look through Airmar, there is no 600w in hull transducer and in hull transducers are much more expensive!

For best performance the acoustic window of a transducer should be in direct contact with water. CHIRP is for those requiring the best performance so it's no surprise most of the CHIRP transducers are thru hull. Thru hull is also excellent for high speeds.

abbor, will the update give the same "pinch to zoom" feature to the Gen 2 touch as the new gen 3's?

Try fitting a TM150 to your non-CHIRP Gen2T - you will be pleasantly surprised.

No, a multi-touch screen is needed for pinch to zoom. I have pinch to zoom on NSS Evo2, I have never used it on the water, just tested it for fun at home.

But you also have a convenient knob for zoom on the Evo2 which does not exist on the Lowrance.

HDS Touch (and also Gen3) has dedicated Zoom buttons, works fine.

Zoom buttons don't have velocity like a knob!

As you know, I prefer Simrad over Lowrance due to the knob.

X2. We have the Gen 2 HDS 8 and 5. Linked. Would like to know how the TM150 would improve what we have.

What transducer do you currently use?

You can use TM150M on Elite CHIRP. It even works quite a bit better then the HDI-options. Choose the general Medium CHIRP in the ducer-menu and off you go. I have not tried other medium CHIRP ducers on Elite CHIRP.

The Elite CHIRP medium frequency is not a good match for TM150M. Elite Medium CHIRP bandwidth is 60-100kHz, TM150M bandwidth is 95-155kHz. If TM150M is better than HDI with Elite CHIRP this is illustrating the problem with CHIRPing high Q-factor transducers very well.

The TM150 strangely enough does not work well on the Elite CHIRP, even at 100kHz.

How can you select 100kHz fixed frequency for Elite CHIRP?

It's not strange that TM150M will not work well with Elite CHIRP. Elite CHIRP don't support the TM150M bandwidth. 83kHz is outside TM150M bandwidth.
