Default Simrad EVO 2 update rant

I made the choice to go with Simrad for my rebuild. That is turing out to be a major mistake!!!! I have spent countless hours on the phone with them in regards to issues with the sounder, echo and MFD. The latest is that i did the update for the EVO2 and yes it apparently fixed the year long issue of no temp but now I get no depth from the units, are you kidding me???? WTH simrad???? Solve one issue to create others really I would rather know the depth than to know the temp. I would call you but you are not there when I am on the water and the first question is are you on the water? How about this, I call you when I am able to be on the water and you answer be it a saturday or sunday, that is when I am able to be on the water. Maybe someone can help me other that the manufacture because they have know Idea. thx

The only people I see crying about simrad are on here, that really goes for all of the brands, you only see complaints on the interwebz, you know how clogged this would be if everyone that loved theirs would come on here?
I just switched from garmin to Simrad, not because it's better but I personally get a better deal on simrad. But the going and is growing pains with all of them. Out of the last 30 evo2's that I've installed I've only replaced one and I'm almost sure it was braise of the way the customer hooked it up.

I've been very disappointed with their stuff. Granted, I'm asking more of it than most users, but many of the issues I have encountered will impact any type of boat, not just bigger ones.

www.MVTanglewood.com for details.

And Simrad tech support is abysmal.

I really like how the products are designed and how they operate, but there are just too many bugs for it to be a workable system for me, and Simrad seems to place a much higher priority on adding new features over fixing bugs.

This is exactly why I returned my Evo2 that was at my builder. That came about the day the new Garmin units were introduced in October. I put my entire build on hold and glad I did. Word I received is that Navico farms out their code writing to 3rd party vendors and it's not done in house which is what Garmin does. Unfortunately this is most problematic for the end user. Very happy I jumped ship to Garmn and I hope Simrad gets it right. Poor business practices result in bad publicity when the day is done.

I read your blog post. How can you be sure there are bugs both in NSO Evo2 and AC12 based on what you have experienced? There are no sequencing problems with AC12 when combined with first generation NSS or NSS Evo2.

BTW, a bit strange to wait until NSO Evo2 v3.0 software is out before commenting v2.0. v2.0 has been out since July last year.

No, nothing strange really as he has posted several times previously in some detail on the Simrad hardware and software problems he experienced.

Certainly it is true that every manufacturer has problems of various kinds. My own experience with post-Navico Simrad was very poor due to repeated hardware failures, the initially poor BSM-2 performance, the mediocre radar, and one of the problems twistedtree identified, which was the ARPA dysfunctionality.

Maybe Simrad has been selling more units so the volume of reported problems has gone up more than other brands because there are just more people using them. I don't know the volume statistics, however, Garmin certainly sells a lot of product as well, possibly even more than Simrad.

Sharing reliability, performance, and customer service experiences is helpful to people trying to pick equipment. If someone is very focused on reliability and great support, probably they should buy Furuno. If they want the features and interface (or they like the price/feature package) that Simrad provides and are willing to take a small chance of having to send the equipment back or not have it work right, they can choose for themselves.

It's the date of the blog post (today) I commented. I know he has been ranting for a couple of weeks. But why spend time writing on his blog about experiences with an older software version for equipment which is removed from the boat.

Simrad does not have more field returns than the competition. Most post seen here on THT about Simrad issues are software issues or user related, not that many hardware issues.

No this week happens to be Simrad complaint week, I made a note two weeks ago on a similar subject when several other members were voicing complaints about Garmin. I even stated that in about 2 weeks we'll see some complaints about Simrad or Lowrance. But I agree the few complaints on here (no matter what Brand) pales in comparison to the number of people that are happy with their units. That's why there is no "Best Brand/Unit", in fact the best brand or unit is the one that you(the customer/user) have the best experiences with and are so comfortable to use that if you do encounter a problem it's not that big of a deal. I have have exceptional experiences with Garmin and Simrad equally, but you couldn't give a Raymarine or Humminbird (and I sell them both) because I don't like their menu and pages layouts and the interfaces. But both of them are excellent brands just not brands for me. I can't speak for Furuno (because I don't sell or install them) but we have only taken back one evo2 since they've come out and we can't keep the 7 &9's in stock, I work the Flagship WM here in St. Pete so we move some equipment. I haven't seen one fail from a hardware issue yet, I've only read on here about the issue with flush-mounting the 16's.
I'm sure there will be some aches and grones about the Garmin's xsv's too....if they ever get here

I don't know where the bug(s) are. All I can describe with certainly is the behavior. Only an engineer looking through the code could tell us that, and I don't think they will. What I said in the blog is that both the NSO and AC12 are party to the problem. It takes those two products, interacting as I described to create the problem. I also can't comment on how the NSS behaves since I haven't tried it in the same way.

As for timing, it's because Chris Grady asked. I've had several problem report blog posts in draft for a while, and Chris's inquiry prompted my to complete two more, and I have two remaining in the queue.

Of all the problems that I've reported, Simrad has only identified one that had been fixed, and that's the missing CPA and TCPA calculations for AIS targets. In my blog, I said it was supposed to be fixed in V3, but I have no way to test that any longer, so if someone else wants to check, it would be of service to others I'm sure. Simrad was unable to give me any planned resolution to any of the other issues, so I have no reason to believe they have been fixed in V3. So other than the CPA/TCPA issues which I clearly called out as expected to be fixed in V3, I don't think I have identified an "old" problems. I think it is all current.

Call it ranting if you like. I think I'm just conveying the hard cold facts, and trying to be as objective about it as I can.

I'm writing about it because it's an experience I'd like to help others avoid. That's what customer feedback and forums like this are all about. And I believe all the problems I have reported are still valid in the current release with one exception. Or more precisely, Simrad told me of only one problem that was expected to be fixed in what we now know as V3.

I have no idea what their return rates are, and how they compare to other companies. I did not have any hardware issues. That part was fine.

I like Simrad's hardware...just wish I could pair it with Standard Horizons support.

Because he can, and he may. Who made you judge over what someone may write?
