Default JL Audio Speaker & Sub Wiring Question

I currently have a JBL 6004 Amp installed. It's not enough, I know, but for now I do not want to rewire and spend another $600 on the right amp... Maybe this summer.

My question is for now, how can I make the most out of what is available?:

Current system:
JBL 6004 Amp
60w @ 4 ohms x 4 chan
160w @ 2 ohms x 2 chan (bridged)

Current full range pair:
JL 7" MX-770 in the cockpit (Robalo R235 Walkaround) (Two Group 29DC batteries)

There are two 8" access hatches that I want to replace with subs or speakers and increase the bass output. Kind of set on JL 8" subs but unsure of how to get the most mileage...

Option 1:
Add one 8" sub and run it in bridged mode. (3 chan off the amp. 60x2 and 160x1 to the sub)

Option 2:
Add two 8" subs and run in standard mode. (4 chan off the amp. 60x4)

Option 3:
Bridge two channels and run speakers and woofers in parallel. (160x2) (This is confusing me the most)

Model number for the JL Sub - manual says it will run minimally with 50-60RMS which is what the amp will push at 12-14v depending...
JL 8" Sub IVIBIB5

I don't want to drill a 10" hole or rewire / change amps at this time. Open to other ideas using one or both of the existing 8" hatch holes. Looking to spend under $300 for the project.

Also, I have not yet installed the MX-770s which will be going in where two 6.5's were before so maybe there is another option I am not thinking of...

Thanks!!

I'd rather see you do 2 pairs of 7.7 speakers. You won't get a ton of bass because it's only 60 watts and they can only play so low. But for future upgrade a 600x1 and 2 subs 10 inch will be the perfect combo. You can't run a 2 ohm load bridged.

The 7.7's don't fit in the 8" hole and I don't want to make a starboard patch.... Or cut another hole for a 10" sub. Take a look at the pic and you might get a better idea of what is there.

My idea for the future is to get a 6 ch amp and run the 770s at 75-85rms with the subs bridged to 160 or whatever. Or doing a single sub and a better 4 ch amp than the JBL.

I guess the question is this:
1. One fully powered 8" woofer or two underpowered 8" woofers...?
2. Run the 770s in parallel on a bridged channel for 80rms @ 2ohms or standard for 60rms @ 4 ohms?

BTW - thanks for taking time to reply to these questions.

Fewer properly powered speakers will always be better sounding than more under powered speakers.
The biggest issue in setting up a system properly is making sure that the speakers are getting the power they are designed to run on.

Properly power the subs / speakers even if it requires the addition of another amp. In the end it will make a very big difference in the way the system sounds. Another option would be to use the JL 8.8 in the holes. They when properly powered will give you decent base for sure.

1. Opportunity cost / nominal incremental value. There are many other things I would choose to do before spending $1500 on a sound system for the boat. It already sounds pretty good I just want to perk up the bass with a quick fix. Having money is not really an issue. Also looking for a new boat in the next few years...

2. I decided not to drill more holes in the boat, to go with JL for speakers, and that I need a sub. So technically I am doing it once just doing it in stages. Any future upgrade would be limited to a better amp and a rewire perhaps a set of tweeters.

3. Week-long trip to the Keys in March.

Drop in a pair of 8.8 and power them properly and you will have the base you need. If you would like to discuss it give me a call or shoot me and email and I will help you.
