Default Waypoint management

My waypoints and fishing spots span many years and boats with different electronics. As I hope to not be on my last boat or tied to one electronics brand, what do you guys do for mass waypoint storage? I was thinking a spreadsheet may be the easiest and most reliable method, but I would love to hear opinions...

There are a few software programs out there that help manage waypoints. After trying several over the years I use "Andren Software". You can import and export waypoint files to several different file formats, including excel if you choose to keep a spread sheet. Personally, I have always kept a back up excel file of my waypoints, just in case...

If you are using Garmin you can use a sd chip an copy everything on to the chip. Download Homeport and you can save to your computer.

Agreed, Garmin Homeport is a free download and works well. Too bad they don't apply the same user friendliness to their plotters.

I looked at Andren and it looks to be the solution. I also like the idea of having an excel backup. I am sending my e7 in for the recall this week, so it seems as good of a time as any to start building the file. Thanks for the replies!

You can give Reefmaster a chance. I did not use it, but seem a pretty good piece of software.

The programs come and go, and I have attempted to use many of them, however over the long haul only one thing has been consistent, and reliable, Google Earth. I enter all mine in google earth and save as a .kml file. This can then be imported by many of the brand specific programs.

Even though it is older, I think that Garmin Mapsource is a much better option than Homeport. A combination of Mapsource and GPS Babel will do most anything that one needs. I also use GPSU for my friends with Furuno equipment.
