Default Garmin 1040xs Internal Map Upgrade Takes a While

I purchased a map upgrade for my Garmin 1040xs chartplotter from Garmin the other day and downloaded it to an SD card. When I plugged the card into my chartplotter, it took FOREVER to update. After an hour, I figured that my download was corrupted and turned the plotter off. Of course, by this time it had wiped out the previous version of the map that was in the plotter’s memory. Rats!

Long story short, I called Garmin support from my boat, explained my situation, and told the representative that I thought an hour for an update was a pretty long time and maybe I had a problem. The rep was patient with me and told me to give it an hour and a half !

Well I got busy futzing around and then came back an hour and a half later and EUREKA, the thing had updated! Hooray.

The purpose for this post is (#1) to recognize Garmin for their good customer support (local guys, not Mumbai) and (#2) to alert you all that if you do do a map upgrade on a Garmin 1040xs and want to load the software onto your device, it takes MORE than an hour. Be patient.

Now I know … and so do you.
