Default New and reused transducer

G'day all experts,

I'm wanting to improve my fishfinder - Furuno FCV-587 on my 21ft fiberglass

At the moment it has the standard P66 tm transducer which works ok and holds bottom mostly at +- 15-18 knots in reasonable to good conditions and up to about 30 meters. We regularly fish in the 70-80 meters so am looking for something that will:
  1. Hold bottom at around 20 - 22 knots in some swell
  2. Give good to excellent bottom and fish images at the 70-80 meters (and the occasional 120-150)
  3. Not cost a fortune

I'm happy to go through hull (am expecting to given the parameters I've laid out), however have limited space (approx 10-15cm) between the inside of the transom and fuel tank else a minor deck mod to put an inspection hatch onto a side tank will be required. The trailer currently has rollers, I'm thinking of changing to bunks but one thing at once unless this is needed to achieve the results wanted with a specific transducer that can't work with rollers.

In addition to this I'm running a Garmin GPSMAP750s with the standard transducer (came with the boat). My thoughts are to use the p66 with this given it's better performance over the standard transducer. My question is two fold - is this sensible and then is it possible?

Thoughts and comments welcome. Photos of the transom and hull are attached.

Why not upgrade to a Tm260 ..it is 50 times more sentive at 50 kHz then the P66.
And you will be also now able to fire 1 Kw instead of 600 watts.

I have thought of the transom mount but have been strongly advised to go through- hull rather than tm for consistent performance. Is this valid? If I was to go through bull which transducer would be recommended? I'm thinking the SS164 to give 1kw .

Any thoughts on the reuse of the P66 on the Garmin?

You are correct..a thru hull will have an advantage due to the fact it is running in far cleaner water.
But a properly installed multi element Tm can hold its own.

As to the P66..It now has a10 pin Furuno connector and there is a 10 to 6 pin adapter to go to a Garmin 6 pin unit.

I've seen the TM260 with the fcv-585 in action several times and if it's installed properly, it's an awesome combo even while running 30 knots. The only time we lost bottom was while in reverse with is normal for any ducer.

Mine never loses bottom unless I am over 200fa. It holds at 36mph.

So to add to the confusion I've had a chat to a local who is better informed than myself. He's suggested looking at the M260 if the hull isn't cored. Thoughts on this vs the TM260?

Many M260 installs can loose depth capability up to 30% or so due to the attenuation of the hull.

If depth is important than that should be taken into consideration.
