Default Standard Radio Issue

I have a Standard Horizon GX1600. Rarely us it but I am going to . The last trip out I could converse with a companion boat that was in site of me . But could not hear from a boat that was about 5 miles away. He could here me clearly but I could not hear him. My other buddy who was in site of me was transmitting and receiving the boat about 5 miles away just fine.

It was on 25W and ship to ship ..but the screen on the top right next to the watt indication said "BUSY"..

My antenna in mounted on top of my T-Top. It's a 5 footer and the better thicker fiberglass style.

Any help to what going on ??

Hello. Do try the squelch control, this removes external radio intereference, turn it up just high enough to not ear the typical radio noise or until the busy indicator goes out. Hope this helps.

Could well be the squelch too high, but, if not, check :

1. This radio has a "local" vs. DX control. DX is for hearing far away stations. Set it for DX.

2.the antenna and its cable and connection to the radio. Remove the connection, clean it and spray a little red Corrosion X. If either the antenna or, more likely, the cable, have any cracks in it, you will need a new antenna.

A good method to test the sensitivity of a VHF Marine Band radio installation is by using signals from NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts. See

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ref...ennaRange.html

Local noise sources on a boat can significantly degrade receiver sensitivity.

The observation of the indicator "BUSY" on the radio front panel means the squelch circuit is open. This renders all the comments that the SQUELCH control might be set too high as contrary to the actual observation.

When testing with other boats it is hard to know if the other boat's transmitter and antenna are operating properly. Making an assessment of your radio by using another boat as a source of a test signal could lead to erroneous conclusions. Maybe the reason you cannot hear the boat five miles away is due to poor signal from his transmitter.

Thanks fro the advice, The squelch is set so I don't hear the fuzzy noise. I think the local vs Dx might be the problem and or the connection but the funny thing is that they could hear me very well far away but I couldn't hear them and the boat I was tagging along could hear the just fine. I guess it's time to
clean and inspect everything and I am going to do that NOAA suggestion as well.

OK, so when you set the squelch, I usually turn it just a hair past the background noise...is this not so ?

Your volume may have been turned all the way down.
