Default Garmin software upgrade for 840xs,1040xs,741xs

Garmin just released a new software for the 840xs/820xs and 1040xs/1020xs;

http://www8.garmin.com/support/downl...ls.jsp?id=4749

GPSMAP software version 2.80
Changes made from version 2.70 to 2.80:

GPSMAP 741/741xs software version 3.80
Changes made from version 3.70 to 3.80:

Fixed an issue with certain TM150M transducers not being recognized and potentially being overpowered.
Fixed an issue with the odometer reporting an incorrect distance after a power cycle.
Fixed an issue with the next/previous commands potentially locking up Fusion audio devices.
Added additional NMEA 2000 compatible manufacturers.
Improved the Italian translations....(Come e la Pesca?)

........................

For anyone not familiar doing a software upgrade here is some information.

Garmin offers two options to update the internal operating software of your chartplotter/sounder. This software update will only update the internal operating software of your device. The software update will NOT update mapping data. It is also recommended that you backup all user data (i.e. waypoints, routes and tracks) before performing the software update. During the update process some of this user data may be erased.

There are two options to obtain an SD card with the update on it.
Option #1:

You can download the update bundle for your device from Garmin's device software update page and apply it to a blank SD card. At this time, the downloads are NOT compatible with MAC computers. Before downloading the update, there are two items needed:

1. A blank SD card with at least 1.4GB** of free space.
2. An SD card reader.
3. A computer loaded with Windows Vista or newer

If it has been some time since you last updated your chartplotter/sounder, it is possible the maximum size SD card that can be used is 2GB.
With the SD card reader connected to your computer and the SD card inserted into the reader, follow the instructions below to update your devices operating software.

1.Visit Garmin's device software update page:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/software/marine.html

2. Locate the bundle or device update the corresponds with the device
3. Save the file to the desktop of your computer
4. Double-click the file that was saved in the previous step
5. If the message "This publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" appears, choose the Run button
6. A new window will appear called Marine Product Software Update
7. Click the Next button
8. Choose the drive letter that represents your SD card reader
9. Click the Next button
10. The update will now be applied to the SD card
11. Once the update is complete, click the Finish button
12. Please proceed to "Instructions for Updating Device" below in order to update your chartplotter/sounder

Option #2:
You may also choose to purchase the update on a pre-programmed SD card. Below are links to the cards that can be purchased:
To purchase an update SD card for an echoMAP or GPSMAP 400, 500, 700, 800, or 1000 series device, please order the card at this link.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/prod27597.html
To purchase an update SD card for a GPSMAP 4000, 5000, 6000, 7000, or 8000 series device, please order the card at this link.
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/prod10755.html

Instructions for Updating Device:
Once the pre-programmed SD update card is obtained by either creating one manually or purchasing one from Garmin, please follow these instructions to update the device with the SD update card.

1. Power On the device before inserting the SD update card
2. Choose I Agree when the Warning screen appears
3. Insert the SD update card into the device
4. Choose Update Software
5. The update will begin and update the unit software along with any connected accessories.

IMPORTANT: Do not remove the SD update card until the device fully reboots and I Agree has been selected on the Warning screen. Removing the SD update card before this can corrupt the operating system and may cause the device to be inoperable.

Thanks for the info. I updated our three units last night.

To others with networked units: I spoke to a Garmin rep a while back and she told me that when possible they like to update the units individually versus over the network. She said they find it to be the most reliable way. So I disconnect my network and then update each unit one at a time.

Then if you have peripheral items to update you connect them to one of the units and do the update. Then connect the network back up to everything.

Not sure if it has made a difference, but I haven't had any issues.

Correct...best to update all units individually if possible...just to be on the safe side.

Updated to 2.80 software version over the weekend and it has trashed the sonar. GPS still works fine, but sonar loses bottom for periods of time and will not read depth or re-acquire bottom, depth or regain sounding.
Software update claimed it was successful. Reset to the factory sonar settings and it might have helped a little, but this update sux so far.

You can update maps using a Mac..but not the operational software according to the Garmin information.
System requirements as per Garmin:

"System requirements
IBM-compatible PC running Windows XP or later operating system and an available SD card reader."

Others have found ways around that I have heard etc...so that is a positive.

No not the case. Macs can't handle exe files. Zip files are no problem at all. You need to run parallels or similar.

Macs can read zip files without any issue. They can not read exe files.
