Default Stater & Power Pack Need Replacing

I have a Johnson 115 (97 60 degree) that I bought on an 89 winner that I was told was a running boat. Boat purrs when running out of water and even when revved High.... under load not so much. After spending a couple of months thinking it was fuel related and bad gas...I have an boat mechanic determine that it is the Stater and the Brain that need to be replaced. The person I bought the boat from was a weekender that bought it, and says he kids wouldn't go with him so turned around and sold it a month later to me... who never water tested it... YES I KNOW.

Bottom line is the guy who sold it to him is an engine wholesaler... who wants to try to help me out as he knows how pissed I am. He has offered to give me a Brain and a Stater off of a 90hp (60degree same year Johnson) I looked them up in parts books looks like they will work. Any thoughts? I will start another thread in another forum to ask what I should do about original seller. Reason I am entertaining this idea is I don't expect to have the boat for more than a season or two (although I missed this season) and brand new parts with labor are around 1500. If I can get away with 500 for labor and parts for free is this a bad idea?
