Am I asking too much? Simple desktop/laptop GPS program

I have two NSS 7 Simrad plotters. I dive, spearfish, fish, and boat. I simply want some sort of program that allows me, at my desktop, laptop, or even smartphone/Pad to look up my numbers, decide where to go some day, look at notes, depths, plot a route, etc. I used to do it with Simrad's PC app, but now it doesn't seem to be available anymore for download, so I can't upload it onto my laptop - it is stuck on my PC. I take my laptop with me to the Keys on vacation and would like to be able, the night before, to check out some spots I have and see where to go instead of getting on to my boat, firing up the NSS 7s, and squint at my 6.4" screens for 30 minutes figuring it out.

I can download GPX files from my NSS 7 units onto a micro-SIM card, so I just want a stable, easy to use program to deal with this crap.

Try Homeport from Garmin. It is not that comprehensive and is feature poor, but it will work for your application.

As a Lowrance owner, I found the GPX export format is incorrect. How is it on the Simrad?

Import the GPX file into google earth. That's what i do.

The Navionics apps work pretty good on smartphones and tablets, and the user-uploaded sonar charts are amazing. They lack an application for PC's, though they do have an "app" for windows 8.

That's what I ended up doing - the Homeport program wouldn't import any of my GPX files. I may try uploading the native Simrad file next into it and see if that works.

I just work in GPX only. You can modify it on the computer and then import back into your machine. You can on lowrance at least.

THANK YOU - that seemed to work better than any of the others. Plus I can download and install NOAA maps into it - very cool. A little difficult at first to figure out, but eventually I got it down and am now looking forward to exploring all its options.

I chased some of these programs around when I 1st got my boat but they all seem to eventually either not work right to begin with or decline with time. All of em' have to be updated as windows, new plotters, etc. change and that seems to be where the lag occurs. So about 2+ years ago, I set up my HDS-8's with a plywood holder and plug in power so I can work them directly from anywhere there's an outlet. It's worked out very nicely as after most trips, I sit down and go over the route and waypoints to amend and make notes of what worked and didn't work. We just about always plug one in the night before a trip to plan; the last time, I even set a route so when we left the pass the AP took over the 1st, 2nd and 3rd legs.

That is what I use and like it a lot

If my boat had a wheenhouse, I'd run this on a PC onboard

for now I use it in my office for waypoint and route planning and management, upload to chartplotter via SD card to use the same data on my chartplotter
