Default radar domes??

The dome on my boat recently crapped out and we're looking to replace it to communicate with our garmin 4212. Does anyone recommend one that is a healthy mix between quality/price that they know of? Does it have to be a Garmin product?

I have the 4212 on my boat also. The radar does need to be a Garmin product. Depending on your budget I'd recommend either a Garmin GMR 18xHD or Garmin GMR 24xHD. The GMR 18xHD and GMR 24xHD both have a range of 48 nautical miles but the 24 will give you better target separation. The GMR 18xHD is about $1,400 and the GMR 24xHD runs about $2,100. I actually have the older GMR 18HD which you can buy for about $1,000 and it works well but if I had to replace it I'd go with the GMR 24hHD now.

The 24" dome has a narrowerbeam width which gives better target definition. An open array antenna will give a far superior picture and definition, but will be twice as much $$. On smaller vessels, and open array may not be desirable, but over 28 ft...good to go imo
