Default Radar upgrade help needed

I have a 79 sea ray that I am looking to upgrade the radar on. I am looking at using a furuno system. To be honest i cannot afford new. I have found a used furuno black box vx2 with a 6' open array and a 15" navicomp monitor for $3000. It uses the navionics gold charts. I have heard that cmaps are a better program than the navionics. I have heard also the black box has been discontinued. My question is whether or not this is a smart approach or if I should consider something else. I would like the best bang for my buck. I am not savvy with all the radar terminology. Any honest advice would be helpful.

I know the system you are looking at. I have to say I am a big fan of the Furuno VX2 Black Box stuff, I've seen dozens of these units with 5, 10, 20 thousand hours on them, if you keep them dry, they're bulletproof. Nauti-comp - don't know much about them, but I wouldn't worry too much about the monitor, used marine monitors are a dime a dozen.

The price is very fair. One thing I would want to know is if it's a 12kw or 25kw radar. The description mentions a PSU-008 which is the power supply for a 25kw, the transceiver pictured is an RTR-060 which is a 12kw x'cvr. It should be a PSU-005. Can't vouch for the seller, I've met him several times, he's tight with a shop we do a lot of business with who also happens to be a Furuno dealer so I think he's a good guy to deal with.

I'll add that on a Sea Ray, you might want to go a different direction as the monitor might not be as waterproof as you would like, and the high powered radar might be overkill, how big is the boat?

The boat is a 366 express cruiser (1979) so it measures overall at about 38 to 40' with a
14' beam. It has the "t" top roof and the monitor would be under that area.... I like the open array radars they look good as an option.
however I can't stress enough that I'm new to the radar world and would like to get something that is powerful and heard that the larger the antenna the better the reception and depiction of objects. Again this is all that I have been reading lately online....
This is the posting add.....

Furuno Navnet VX2 Black Box System comes with

Nauticomp 15" Multi Purpose Display Monitor,

Furuno RPU-015 Processor - which uses Navionics Gold SD charts which are "not included",

Furuno RCU-017 Tracball Controller,

Furuno Radar RSB-0072 with 6 ft. open array antenna

with an RTR-060 12kw Transceaver and Radar cable

Furuno PSU-008 Marine Radar Power Supply

Furuno GPS Antenna with only 2 ft long cable

Power Cables, Monitor Interface Cable, Trackball cable, Data cable,

Processor to tracball cable which was cut during removal and will need to be spliced during install

this unit was removed from a Spencer Sportfish during a compleat refit

this will be shipped in 3 boxes

I appreciate all the info I can get and direction. I am currently stuck on looking for a Furuno though....have heard nothing but good.

Does it matter that this unit is discontinued? can you get parts or service? can you tell how many hours are on a unit?

Thanks again!!
