Default humminbird depth sounder hdr 610 wrong depth when engine is on.

hi all, recently bought a used boat and it came with a humminbird hdr 610 already installed. At first glance the depth sounder seemed to be working great but i wasnt paying close enough attention. when the engine is on (neutral or travling) the sounder reads a depth of in the 550ft range reguardless of depth even still on the tailor. when the key is turned to just accessory and is drifting with the motor off it works great (even measured depth with a rope to be sure. I assume its some type of engine noise and i have moved the trans cord as far away as possible from anything else (which isnt far). Should I get ferite core nosie suppressor? Is it even the engine causing it?
