Default Odd Transducer Behavior (Lowrance)

I have a Elite 5, which is simple and has worked well for the past year on my flats boat.

All I really need is charts, depth, speed, temp. I rarely use it for marking structure or fish.

So from time to time I read threads where people are losing depth readings when they are on plane or running at speed.

I have the exact opposite problem.

If I am bombing across the bay WOT the transducer picks up fine and tracks.

But when I drop off plane and I'm drifting or idling the transducer seems to lose itself.

I've checked the installation angle and it looks good so I'm at a bit of a loss.

Anyone else had this occur?
