Default lowrance hds 8 problems

i have a gen 1 hds 8 and recently i am having some issues. the screen flickers alot and the screen color will reverse. i pulled the unit from the console and checked all the connections on the unit and the connections on the battery and everything seemed good. i noticed when i turned the unit up it would be really bad. it also is bad when you tap the unit. i unplugged the my hds 7 up front and plugged the 8 in and had the same issues so i am assuming its the head unit because the 7 works fine. i called lowrance and they suggested to to a reset. i tried the soft reset with no results and i havent tried the hard reset yet but i doubt that will help. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I searched for other similar issues but everyone with flickering screens seem to have problems with the unit cutting off and mine doesnt do that. If i have to send the unit in how much do they normally charge? Its 3 years old so i am assuming its out of warranty. I have a bunch of tournaments coming up and i really cant be without it so i guess i am in a bind for now.

You are still covered under the 5-yr Advantage program(2-yr full warranty, then 3 additional years with discounted options to upgrade). Call CS again to discuss your options.

I just posted about the same issue with my grandfathers HDS 7 ( also 3rd year on boat)

Does your screen flicker/ blink on only the sonar screen?
all my pages work fine except the sonar.

Mine does it no matter what screen is being displayed. I'm thinking there is a bad connection inside the unit because it does it when you tap it.

If your positive that its the unit and you have tried updating software and doing a hard reset, really you only have 2 options...
Open it up yourself and see what you find or call Lowrance and get it shipped to them so they can repair/replace. Since you connected it to another power source and the issue continued its probably the head unit. A software update followed be a hard reset can't hurt and it might just work.

I think I have updated last year. It's a gen 1. What is the latest software update for this unit?

You can check what version you have installed then check the lowrance website to see what the latest version is for your unit. I know on my 8 and 9 i didnt do the latest update just because there wasnt anything in it i needed and they are both networked together and run flawlessly. i recently had my old 522 which is in the bow, start acting up freezing up and beeping and stuff, plugged it in to the others power source and problem followed. So i figured with all th
e hours on it it might be on its last leg. I did a hard reset and it has worked perfect ever since and that was quite a few months ago. Almost had an excuse to upgrade it
