Wouldn't know.
I use the MFD Autorouting on Navionics here in the Netherlands

Garmin's Homeport, very easy, free program. You can plan routes add waypoints etc, all you have to do is save them in the .gpx format to your SD card and throw them in the Simrad! Very simple.

you need to upgrade the generic maps in order to have that feature ?

I assume you're talking about the charts on the unit itself? the answer is no. With Homeport it has it's own charts and they are very basic (much more basic than the unit's) but effective. I've had the HomePort for several years (I paid $29.95 for mine) and now I use it with my NSS 7 evo2, but I had it when I owned all my Garmins.

A paper chart is the only right way to start.

PolarView, export the routes/waypoints as gpx files and load onto the NSS via an SD card

Works great.

I downloaded homeport -but there is no chart over the water ? Its just blue . Does polar view have a chart ? I'm just sick of doing it on the MFD usually at night getting bit by bugs etc ….

lol, I know that feeling !

Yes, both raster and vector charts that you select for the region of interest and it loads them as you zoom in and out

PolarView NS from Polar Navy. It is fantastic software. Runs wonderfully on MacOS.
