Default Networking Garmin 741xs

My local Westmarine rep states the 741xs are stand alone units and not Garmin Marine Network compatible. This makes sense from what I have read. There is a ethernet port that I have connected to the GCV-10 and all works well. Here is the question.

When I add a second 741xs I will run another Ethernet cable to the GCV-10. I think this allows both units to share the downvu and sidevu. I have a G2 Vision card in the port side unit, will the starboard side unit be able to see this enhanced data? Do I need two cards? Lastly when I add a thru hull B175H and plug this into the port unit will the starboard unit be able to use that data as well? Does the GCV-10 effectively network the two units though the Ethernet cables? Is just the sidevu and downvu data shared? What combinations of screens will I be able to make? Worried I should have gone Simrad for the hub-a-bility.

Download the latest software:

Connect the 2 741xs units via the GCV-10 and you can share map (Only 1 G2 Vision card needed) , your B175H sonar and DownVu / SideVu.

You can use any three combinations on the screen you like.

You can also use the 70s as a second unit. ...it will network with the GCV 10.

Will a 70s be able to pickup the radar hooked to the 741 through the GCV-10 network? Lastly, still want a CHIRP 1kw narrow beam transducer. Like everything else just plug into the 741 and the 70 will see that too?

Is there a difference in processing speed between 741, 721 and 70s? Having a hard time finding a reason to spend more on the first two as a second unit.

I think the 70s will only do side V and down V, none of the map, radar and sonar stuff. The 721 or 741 is what you want to share as much as possible. Otherwise you will have to designate screens for functions they are capable of (not so bad when they are right next to each other).

The reason I suggested using the 70s as your secondary unit is to lower your cost if installing your two 7" units.

1) Yes, the 70s can share radar from the GCV 10 or a network expander as long as you have the 3.60 software installed.

2) Yes, the 70s will share the sonar image of any transducer plugged into the 741xs ( 3.6 software)... as well as the output from the GCV 10.

3) Yes, the 70s can share mapping information .

4) Yes, the same processing speed as the 741,721.

......................

Due to the 3.6 software.. using the 70s as a second unit for you is a viable option to both keep the costs down and to still provide a working second station.

Looks like Garmin needs to update their FAQ for the 3.60 firmware: Garmin Marine Network Limitations

Furuno, Simrad, Garmin, Airmar , Raymarine etc ..all have a definite lag in keeping their FAQ's updated in relation to their continuing software updates or engineering changes etc.

That is the benefit of forums like THT.....a good source of usable hands on information to the pros and cons of any recent software or engineering change ...etc.

Yeah, but check out the date on that FAQ entry 4/25/2014, seems like they should have maybe waited that extra couple months to get the major updates from 3.6 since it impacted the networking so much!
