Default Standard horizon issue

I have a Standard Horizon Eclipse gx1200. The speaker is terrible and I have trouble understanding what people are saying. If I turn it above half way the speaker starts "ringing" when people talk. Almost like a mic feedback sound. I want to instal an external speaker but there is no jack! The radio works fine except some quirks that annoy me like not being able to scan all channels. So I'm contemplating wiring in a speaker myself through the cover or just getting a different radio. I have it flush mounted so if I go new radio route I need something very similar in mounting size. Ideas?

The 1200 is their low end radio and the built in speaker is indeed poor. I couldn't hear mine very well since it was mounted inside of my electronics box over the steering wheel. You connect an external speaker through the NMEA wires on the back of the radio. You just strip off some insulation and splice the white wire to the (+) wire on the speaker and then splice the other wire to the shield.

I replaced my 1200 with a 1600 and found that I no longer needed the external speaker. The 1600/1700 series are much better radios.

Default Thx

Was unaware of splicing into the nmea wires. I will try that and see if I can live with this radio a while longer lol thanks for the information.

I am surprised to read this about this unit. I would suggest contacting Standard Horizon and they will swap it out if it is under 3 years old. The ones we have installed do not have this issue.
