The best is probably Iridium Extreme, but in your area I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives giving good performance. I'm very happy with my Iridium Extreme, but Iridium is the only system with guaranteed coverage so far north as my location.

I can only repeat what I said in another thread on this page:

I have now had an Iridium for 12 years. Upgraded to an Iridium Extreme 2 years ago. I have been very happy with them. I have used them in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil. I am a big fan. Never failed to connect, never had any problem whatsoever. The new Extreme has an integrated GPS and is water-resistant ( unfortunately not immersion-proof, which would have made it perfect . I keep mine in a waterproof pouch). So, it is really an outstanding safety device. You can call anyone you want ( record their phone numbers in advance, of course) in an emergency and tell them your position and what the exact nature of your trouble is. Then call again to find out the approx ETA of your rescuers. What more do you need...

I had an Iridium and now have Inmarsat (ISAT). Both work fine, but ISAT is much cheaper.
Do your homework if you are thinking about Global Star. For years people have been buying GS service and finding out when they need it that the service is spotty or nonexistent.

Globalstar had a lot of problems a few years back. They have launched all new satellites in the last couple yrs. I have had GS for two years, the first year there were some issues, but now i never fail to connect. For what its worth....

What make/size boat? If your boat is large enough you may want to look at a Fleetbroadband system. http://www.panbo.com/archives/2014/0..._for_real.html

The hardware is more expensive but this is legitimate military grade gear. It will connect at any time in any part of the world - period. Had one (made by KVH) on my old 45 Cabo and it was awesome. We ran it to a wireless router and connected blackberries and iphones to email/text hundreds of miles offshore.

I used to have a Global Star but was doing a hunting trip in Canada and was told it would not work up there but at certian times of day when the satellites were aligned. They may have changed now I'm not sure. Anyway I changed to Iridium in 2006 and have used it in Canada, Alaska, South America, Central America, Africa, Bahamas and all over the Gulf of Mexico and have not had one issue with the Iridium.
