Default Bottom Discrimination help?

I would like to spend around $3000 on a combo gps fish-finder with transducer, and I am seriously confused with all the options.
A question to anyone who might know. In order to tell the type of sea bottom (rock, sand etc) at say 300 feet, is it necessary to get a Furuno with BDS (eg. 1870f with bottom discrimination)? Is there no way to interpret a Garmin 840xs reading regarding sea bottom? What about the rest of the brands?

Thanks, that's an interesting thread, but most of the pictures are Furuno specific. What about the Garmin 840xs, would I be able to tell the type of bottom? And what about chirp and bottom discrimination, or is it only for fish?
