Default Any comment on Nautamatic Gladiator TR1 Autopilots?

I have been looking for autopilots for a while and I was sold on Raymarine ST8001 untill I heard about these Nautamatic Gladiator TR1. These have the new technology which does not require rudder feedback. Any comments? anyone has it installed yet and can tell me if it is what it claims to be?

The Simrad pilots now are feedbackless also and have adapters for the Verados.

The AP16, 25,26,27 come with true feedbackless. They do have a dodge feature and other programmed steering maneuvers. A mini gyro is available.

Barrett, I get the feeling that you don't care for the TR1 much. My understanding with Simrad is that you still have to standby and press auto, to resume to dodge an object. Price wise, they are almost head to head (TR1 vs. AP25), however I think I will probably save $$$ in installation with TR1 since it has only 6 objects that need to be installed.
Also TR1 has zic-zac , circling and etc. routing for trolling (I fish).
Can you tell me why you favor Simrad? I have no experience and you do, so you must know something I don't.

FYI-
The Simrad AP16 with the Virtual feedback only has 4 components and comes with the rate gyro compass.

actually sitex sold AP's that didnt require rudder feedback long before tr-1's came out. The shadow drive is the winner for TR-1.

I hate to date myself but, I believe Benmar (formally Bendex) had no feedback before Sitex. They didn't even make a pilot with feedback for that matter.

CravenMH is correct that most of the older pilots (Wood Freeman, Benmar, Corsair, etc) did not use rudder feedback--however they were extremely crude pilots in comparison to what we have today. I owned many pilots without feedback--one of the first was made out of a B 26 bomb site and had two parallel tungsten wires for the contacts--but it hunted and was not real accurate.

I will be in the market for a non feedback pilot of the modern (computer driven) type and TR1 certainly sounds like the way to go!

I put one on over the winter, and love it; no rudder feedback and the shadow drive sold me. The pilot has worked flawlessly so I did not need customer service, although they patiently answered all my questions before the sale. They also made up the additional hydraulic lines necessary for the install. Bill

Dave

Search on TR1 or TR-1 and you find a year+ TR-1 opinion history. The negative comments center around cost (& redundant display). All the TR-1 owners are pleased with performance and customer service. You have to demo both a TR-1 and the other one, or purchase the other one & wait till the RFU fails before you'll know.

Download and read the manuals for those APs your considering. Call each of the customer service numbers at 10PM anynight. Factor in the cost of replacing one RFB over a 2-4 year period. OR just buy a RM or Simrad newly designed & not yet field tested AP without RFU.

No need to rush the decision, it took me a year to decide. While on the trailer I had it on & watched the AP adjust the motors with every step and movement of the boat. I'm impressed every time I turn it on.

I just sold my Regulator with a TR1 and I am putting another one in my Triton. I can't say enough about TR1 customer support, they are amazing. Just make sure the installer knows what he is doing.

simrad/robertson is buy far the number one autopilot worldwide bar none. they sell more autopilots than all other manufactures combined. their new virtual feedback (no feedback) bottom contour steering, (you can steer your boat along a depth curve) no drift steering, and pre-programmed steering paterns. Also, now you can get steering patterns in the AP26. Plus they have auto tune default, if you mess up the steering parameters, you hit auto tune default and it resets them.
if you get intouch with simrad, their regional sales manager will answer any questions and if need be he will help you set it up.

Very pleased with my TR-1 after 15 months of use. If I were buying a new boat, I would get another TR-1.
